How the top 10 in the world golf rankings looked in 2025 compared to now with Justin Thomas suffering big fall

Many of the world’s best players will be taking some time away from the game right now, as thoughts begin to turn to the 2027 season.

It has been a surprising year in many ways. Scottie Scheffler did not win a major, while Bryson DeChambeau missed the cut at three of the four biggest events of the year.

Unsurprisingly, there is no change at the very top of the world rankings from this time last year, with Scheffler holding off Rory McIlroy and retaining the number one position. He has already spent more than 200 weeks at the summit of the game across his career.

There have been some notable movers slightly further down, however.

The biggest movers in and out of the top-10 of the Official World Golf Rankings over the last 12 months

The biggest move into the top-10 over the last 12 months has come from Wyndham Clark, with the two-time US Open champion in 33rd place this time last year.

Clark won three times in 2026, including at Shinnecock Hills in June. With that, he is now the world number five. He actually started the year in 46th position.

Matthew Fitzpatrick is now the world number three. It is easy to forget now just how poor his form had been in the months leading into the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage. However, like Clark, the Englishman won three times this season to move up from 28th in the standings.

Chris Gotterup is yet another three-time winner this year. That run moved him up to sixth after he started the season in 26th position.

Justin Thomas experienced the biggest fall out of the top-10 from 12 months ago. Thomas has now dropped to 29th in the world rankings after failing to make it to the Tour Championship.

There is a tie for the next biggest drop, with Justin Rose and Robert MacIntyre falling 12 places in the standings. Rose did win at Torrey Pines while he was also in contention on Sunday at The Masters once again, but his consistency was lacking.
