London Broncos icon calls time on career as coaching role confirmed

London Broncos captain Will Lovell has confirmed his retirement from the sport, pulling the curtain down on a stellar 15-year career.

Playing all his rugby in London, Lovell made his debut for the Broncos in 2012 as part of a 42-18 defeat to Catalans Dragons. Making 10 appearances that season and 15 the year after, the back rower spent time on loan at the London Skolars in both 2013 and 2014.

Moving permanently to the Skolars for the 2015 and 2016 season, the Broncos skipper would return to the club ahead of 2017, where he has been a mainstay ever since.

Totalling 210 Broncos appearances, the 33-year-old will go down as once of the club’s greatest ever servants, and this season has seen him reap the rewards for remaining so loyal to the club.

The Northampton-born talent has captained his side to a Championship Grand Final, a League Leaders’ Shield and the 1895 Cup in 2026, which adds to his two previous Championship titles won earlier in his career.

Lovell will remain at the Broncos heading into 2027, as he takes on the role of reserves head coach.

London Broncos veteran Will Lovell retires aged 33

Speaking on his retirement, Lovell said: “I’d like to thank the fans for the wonderful memories over the years. I’m very proud to have captained the club and to have come through the system from the academy.

“Thanks to JD [Jason Demetriou, head coach], Mike [Eccles, Director of Rugby] and all involved at the club for their support over the years. Looking forward to the journey ahead.”

Eccles added: “Will Lovell’s name will rightly go down in the record books as one of the greatest Broncos to ever pull on the jersey.

“With over 15 years of service to the club from academy to first team, Will has amassed 210 appearances, with 5 years as captain, three championships and an 1895 cup under his belt.

“Most importantly, Will leaves us as the highest appearance maker in London Broncos history. 210 games surpasses the great Steele Retchless. A great moment in time for the Lovell family and us as a club, as we see one of our very own hold the accolade of most appearances.

“Will, Skip, you are a legend. Thank you for your phenomenal service, leadership and friendship throughout your time at London Broncos.”
