The former heavyweight boxing world champion returned to action Tuesday in what was his 77th professional fight.

This past Tuesday night, former heavyweight boxing world champion Oliver McCall returned to the boxing ring to take on Jeremiah Williams at Country Box 45.

Oliver McCall, the 61-year-old former world champion went on to score the win in the fifth round in relatively controversial fashion after the referee called a stop to the fight due to a cut on the eye of Williams.

The cut was opened up due to an accidental headbutt, and even though the 54-year-old was leaking blood, it wasn’t deemed a cut deep enough to warrant the stoppage.

You can match one former fighter against one current fighter. Which two would you pick and who would win?

McCall’s fight against Williams was scheduled for six three minute rounds, and at one point, it looked as though the judges would be needed for their scorecards. In round four, Williams knocked McCall down, but it wasn’t counted as an official knockdown by the referee, with him claiming it was a slip. That is significant due to the fact that McCall has never been knocked down in his professional boxing career.

Interestingly, McCall’s only previous TKO defeat came against Lennox Lewis in their 1997 rematch. However, the circumstances were highly unusual, with McCall refusing to engage during the later rounds before referee Mills Lane stopped the contest. McCall subsequently disputed suggestions that he had quit, claiming his actions were part of a fight strategy.

Despite being 61 years old and now 77 fights into his professional career, McCall believes he is still dangerous in the sport, highlighting names like Hasim Rahman, Shannon Briggs and Jake Paul as potential future fights.

Those sorts of fights are unlikely to come to fruition for McCall, though, as prior to his comeback on Tuesday night, the 61-year-old’s fight was labeled ‘immoral’ and ‘dangerous’ by legendary promoter, Lou DiBella. And because of that, he will likely struggle to find himself on any reputable shows, meaning if he is going to continue fighting, he will continue fighting on small shows.

His opponent, Williams, fell to 19-15-2 with his loss, and because of his age, he wasn’t deemed as a dangerous opponent for McCall. It is likely that if ‘The Atomic Bull’ continues his career, opponents like Williams are who he is going to fight.
