Five England rugby wonderkids who completely fell off
imago0003424341h

England have produced some hugely talented young players who looked destined to become future superstars.

However, not every wonderkid goes on to reach the heights expected of them.

While these five players enjoyed successful careers at the top level, their early promise raised hopes of something even greater.

From injury-hit prodigies to gifted playmakers, we look at five England wonderkids who never quite fulfilled their potential.

5 Jack Clifford

Few young English forwards generated as much excitement as Jack Clifford. He stood out for Harlequins with his power and athleticism, while his leadership skills shone through at international age-grade level.

Clifford captained both England Under-18s and Under-20s, helping the latter win the 2013 World Rugby Under-20 Championship.

A senior England debut followed in 2016 against Scotland in the Six Nations, seemingly putting him on the path to a long international career.

Sadly, injuries had other ideas. Repeated fitness problems held him back for years, and Clifford eventually announced his retirement in August 2020, aged just 27.

4 Gabriel Ibitoye

Speed, confidence and a knack for beating defenders made Gabriel Ibitoye one of England's most exciting young prospects.

He reached consecutive World Rugby Under-20 Championship finals in 2017 and 2018, before earning a place in Eddie Jones' England training squad the following year.

His early performances at Harlequins only added to the growing belief that he could become a senior international.

Instead, Ibitoye took a different route. He left Quins for France in 2020, spending time with Agen and Montpellier before joining Tel Aviv Heat.

His England ambitions faded, but his career was far from over.

A move to Bristol Bears gave him a fresh start, and he has since established himself as one of the Premiership's most dangerous attacking players and prolific try-scorers.

3 James Simpson-Daniel

At his best, James Simpson-Daniel was almost impossible to contain. The Gloucester winger combined blistering pace with superb footwork and a natural eye for the try line, making him one of English rugby's most gifted attacking players.

He announced himself on the international stage against New Zealand in 2002, then scored twice in Gloucester's Powergen Cup final victory in 2003.

His club career continued to flourish, culminating in being named Premiership Player of the Season in 2008. England, however, never got to see the best of him consistently.

A succession of back, hip, collarbone and ankle injuries ruined his chances of building momentum, with the 2003 and 2011 World Cups among the major tournaments he missed.

Simpson-Daniel finally retired in 2014, aged 32, having never fully realised his international potential.

2 Anthony Allen

Leicester Tigers supporters saw just how good Anthony Allen could be during his time at Welford Road. After making his England debut against New Zealand in 2006, the centre moved to Leicester in 2009 and became a vital part of the side.

Two Premiership titles followed, with Allen earning man of the match honours in the 2013 final. He had also been named Players' Player of the Season in 2011.

For all his success at club level, international recognition remained frustratingly limited. Allen struggled to turn his consistent performances into a regular place in England's midfield, while injuries began to take their toll later in his career.

His playing days came to an abrupt end in 2015, when he retired aged just 28.

1 Danny Cipriani

Danny Cipriani had the talent to become one of England's all-time greats.

A gifted playmaker with exceptional vision and attacking flair, he burst onto the scene at Wasps as a teenager, helped the club lift the Heineken Cup in 2007 and made his England debut the following year.

Expectations were enormous, with many believing he could become the country's long-term answer at fly-half.

Yet Cipriani's international career never matched the hype.

Disciplinary issues, inconsistent displays and repeated selection setbacks disrupted his progress, while his move to the Melbourne Rebels in Australia made his route back into the England side even harder.

He missed the 2011 and 2015 World Cups and finished his international career with only 16 caps.

That hardly tells the full story, though.

Cipriani enjoyed considerable success at club level and was named the Rugby Players' Association's Players' Player of the Year in 2019, a reminder of the extraordinary ability he possessed.
