The four-player mega deal involving the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) came out of nowhere on Thursday, November 5. The Indian Premier League (IPL) informed its followers about the blockbuster deal on its official social media accounts. While SRH has been benefited with the inclusions of Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis, why CSK confirmed Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards remains as a surprise to the cricket fans.
Former Team India and CSK spinner Ravichandran Ashwin tried to explain why his former team has added Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards to their squad ahead of the IPL 2027. The former spinner in his YouTube video claimed that by doing these kinds of deals, the franchise may be preparing for a big money deal in the upcoming players' auction.
Ravichandran Ashwin stated that by signing Liam Livingstone, the Chennai Super Kings have taken a bet. It is still unknown whether MS Dhoni will play in the 2027 season after missing the IPL 2026 campaign entirely. For years, Dhoni remained the designated finisher for the team.
Ashwin pointed out that, as Dhoni is uncertain to play, the franchise might have wanted to secure someone who can smash pacers in the death overs. Livingstone is that kind of batter who can play explosive knocks in a short duration.
"At a reduced cost of 6 crores, CSK has taken a punt on Livingstone. He can smash, and CSK have been searching for a pace-hitting finisher as a replacement for Dhoni. He might turn a corner as a pace-hitter in Chepauk," Ravichandran Ashwin explained.
The former spinner further mentioned that SRH would be benefited with the inclusion of the Australian pace bowler Nathan Ellis who is known for his death bowling abilities. In place of pacers Ellis and Khaleel Ahmed, both of whom had injury issues during the previous season, CSK invested in Livingstone and Edwards. But will CSK put them in their playing XI? Ashwin raised the question.
"This trade came out of the blue. I am surprised CSK made this move. This trade is a massive gain for SRH. Hyderabad is a high-scoring ground, and SRH has bolstered their side with another defensive bowler in Ellis. CSK has given away two first-11 players. But whether Livingstone and Edwards are first-11 options for CSK remains to be seen," said Ashwin.
Further in the video, Ashwin predicted that by selling off Prashant Veer and some other talents from the team, CSK may want to secure a handsome purse for the auction. The former spinner will not be surprised if the Yellow brigade goes heavy on some particular players during the auction.
"But I feel CSK may be planning something internally that's not evident on the outside. By releasing Prashant Veer and a few others, they could enter the auction with 25 to 30 crores. Maybe they are sensing a marquee player like Cameron Green entering the auction. I've also heard that CSK are looking hard for the left-arm spinner," he continued.
