Manchester United may soon be on the hunt for another new manager.
Sadly, it looks like the wheels have come off at Old Trafford under Michael Carrick, and Wednesday evening’s 4-1 loss to Como only served to underline what a disaster this season has been so far.
Lisandro Martinez criticised Jason Wilcox last week, but Bruno Fernandes took aim at Carrick and his staff on Wednesday, in what could be a death knell for Carrick’s spell as United boss.
If Carrick does go, United will need a replacement, and according to The I Paper, there is one ‘dream’ candidate they have in mind.
Who do you want to see as Manchester United manager?
Fabregas or Nagelsmann, maybe Conte if he agreed to a short term deal
Enrique is the only one I want, maybe Conte, but don’t see him as long term
I know a lot has changed since then but my entire thought process went out the window with how Ten Hag’s tenure went. I feel like up until then, the fix was get an exciting manager in and give them time. Now I just have no faith in any option
According to The I, United are dreaming of hiring Unai Emery as their new manager.
The Spaniard has worked wonders at Aston Villa in recent years, taking the Villans from genuine relegation candidates under Steven Gerrard to Champions League regulars and Europa League winners in recent seasons.
Of course, Emery has had a crack at managing one of England’s biggest clubs before with Arsenal. And while that didn’t exactly go to plan, Mikel Arteta’s first few years at the Emirates showed that may not have been entirely Emery’s fault.
Emery is one of the world’s top coaches, and according to Gary Neville, he may well be the best in the Premier League.
Speaking on his podcast towards the end of last season, Gary Neville reserved some special praise for Unai Emery.
The pundit said Emery should be a contender for the Manchester United job, claiming that he was the second-best manager in the Premier League at that point due to his experience in Europe – behind Pep Guardiola but ahead of Mikel Arteta and Arne Slot.
“He (Emery) should be in contention because I’ve said before I think he’s the second-best manager in the league when it comes to experience in Europe after Pep Guardiola. Mikel Arteta and Arne Slot will have something to say about that and think differently maybe, but Unai Emery is exceptional,” Neville said.
As Neville says, Emery has been ‘exceptional’ for Aston Villa in recent years, and a similar sort of rebuild job is now needed at Old Trafford.
Emery could well be the man United need, but only time will tell which direction the Red Devils decide to go in.
