Irish pair Shauna Browne and Christina Desmond both took big steps towards world title fights over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Browne captured the WBA Gold and IBF International lightweight titles in London on Sunday some 24 hours after Desmond became the EBU super-lightweight champion in Valencia, Spain.

Tipperary southpaw Browne moved to 9-1 with a stunning stoppage win over the previously undefeated Jade Burden. The Clonmel native recovered from going down in the second round to stop her opponent in the sixth after stunning her with a huge right hand before piling on the pressure.

She now has her sights set on any of the champions in the 135lb division, with the only person to beat Browne, Elif Nur Turhan, set to defend her IBF world title against American superstar Alycia Baumgardner next month.

"I'm an exciting fighter. Even if it doesn't go my way, I will pull it back somehow no matter what," said Browne.

"I'm glad I got to prove that. It's not going to go your way every time and you have to be able to adapt accordingly.

"I've proven I can take a shot and by God can I give one too."

Meanwhile, Cork southpaw Desmond took her record to 7-0 with a points victory over Spain's Clara Lopez on away soil. The victory came just 15 days after she defeated Galway's Louise Creaven to win the BUI Irish super-lightweight belt in the first ever all-Irish female title fight.

And Desmond, a serving member of An Garda Síochána, has made no secret of going to the very top of the division Katie Taylor dominated for the last few years of her career.

"I'd love to be a world champion. I'd love to be a world title contender," she told IrishBoxing.com.

"Nobody really knew about the opportunity for the European title until I announced it in the ring after the fight.

"Obviously I had to win that Friday night. Announcing that to my own home crowd was amazing, but I knew the job wasn't done.

"I knew I'd worked hard for the weeks coming into that so I just knew I had to get back into it switch back into training.

"I'm very happy with how it went and I just couldn't believe that my hand was lifted."

Browne was keen to pay tribute to fellow Clonmel boxer Kaysie Joyce, who won a bronze medal at the U19 World Championships over the weekend.

"Female boxing in Ireland is at an all-time high, amateur and professionally," she added. "We're all doing our thing.

"My next step should be a world title, 100% I want every one of them."
