Plans in place for Flintshire derby to attract 1,000 fans

Connah's Quay Nomads are facing Flint Town United this Friday night (November 6).

The Nomads currently have the lowest average home attendance in the Cymru Premier, at around 295, partly due to the fact that they are currently playing their home matches at the Essity Stadium in Flint.

This week, they will be hosting the hometown club and their local rivals, and a project is now underway to draw in over 1,000 fans for the occasion.

Alex Catton, founder of Vedere Travel, a sports travel company based in Chester, is working with The Nomads on 'Friday Night Lights'.

In order to draw in more people to the match, a fireworks display has been arranged alongside the Flint RNLI.

There will also be food stalls and 'Kid De Gea' will be attending to face penalties from both clubs' academies at half-time.

Alex, who played for Connah's Quay Nomads as a youngster, said: "We want families to come down, have a good evening and want to return.

"I have been connected to the Nomads for most of my life. I live in Hawarden and run Vedere Travel in Chester, we arrange trips to sporting events around the world so I know a thing or two about sports events and crowds. I wanted to see whether some of that experience could help a club closer to home.

"The club has achieved so much, supported by volunteers who put an enormous amount into it, but crowds have been averaging around 300. We’re hoping to get more than 1,000 through the gates for the Flintshire derby and show people what they’ve got on their doorstep."

Alex has just recently returned from Austin, Texas in the USA where he was working with Formula 1 and was invited to a Texas Longhorns game.

He said: "Seeing how they make the whole day an occasion gives you plenty of ideas, and we’re trying to bring a little of that thinking here.

"The biggest development has been partnering with Flint RNLI. We want this to be a proper night out for families: come down early from 6pm, enjoy the fireworks at 7pm, then head to the Essity Stadium for kick-off at 8pm.

"The RNLI team have been amazing. They’ve brought their display slightly forward, and the FAW have moved kick-off back by 15 minutes so people can enjoy both.

"That co-operation has made a huge difference, and we’ve put together discounted combined football and fireworks tickets to make the whole evening affordable."

The football on its own will cost just £5 for adults to attend, with children going free.

Alex added: "We’ve had some amazing support from local businesses too. Bonni’s Pizza, Sweet Box Wrexham and CoffeeDream are joining us, alongside the ground’s usual kiosk. The social club opens from 6pm with live entertainment, and the bar inside the ground will be open too.

"The Garden Club Hire have very kindly donated a pop-up merchandise marquee, where we’ll be selling Nomads and Flint scarves as well as both clubs’ home shirts.

"We want supporters coming along, wearing their colours and getting involved. Ian Gibbons is kindly providing the music system, which is a huge help in getting the atmosphere going.

"Both academies will have their own ends to bring some colour and friendly rivalry, and at half-time their players will take penalties against goalkeeper and content creator Kid De Gea. Flint Retail Park have also agreed to free parking from 5pm until midnight.

"We really want this to be a family experience, kids go free and we have opened this up to all local schools.

"We really want this to be a huge night for the local community. The challenge is getting people to try a game in the first place. Once they’re through the gates, we want to give them an evening they enjoy enough to keep coming back — and get the kids asking when the next match is."
