DURHAM, N.C. — Duke football dominated Boston College for a 47-2 Halloween win on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Wallace Wade Stadium.
The Blue Devils (6-2, 3-2 ACC) led 27-2 at halftime before outscoring the Eagles (4-4, 2-3) 20-0 in the second half for their second straight victory to close out October. It's the first time Duke has back-to-back wins in October since 2015.
The Blue Devils are back in action on the road at NC State on Saturday, Nov. 7
Here's our report card for the Blue Devils in their Halloween win over the Eagles:
Duke's 44 points are its most against an FBS opponent this season and its most since it put up 62 vs. William & Mary in Week 4. The Blue Devils finished the day with 386 total yards, averaging six yards per play.
Walker Eget completed 11 of his 18 pass attempts for 201 yards. Nate Sheppard set a Duke single-game touchdown record with his five rushing touchdowns, and Jeremiah Hasley added his first touchdown reception of the year.
Duke went 5-of-12 on third down tries and was a perfect 7-for-7 in its trips to the red zone.
Duke's defense brought constant pressure to Boston College quarterback Mason McKenzie and held the Eagles' offense scoreless after it put up 49 points against Georgia Tech last week and ran for almost 400 yards. Boston College finished with just 213 total yards against Duke, with 78 of those coming on the ground.
By the end of the first half alone, Boston College only ran six plays in Duke's half of the field and was a combined 0-for-7 on third- and fourth-down attempts, while the Blue Devils had three sacks and five tackles for loss.
Duke finished with 11 tackles for loss and six sacks and came up with two turnovers: Bryce Davis' strip-sack recovered by Nick Morris Jr. and a Kobe Smith fumble recovery. The Eagles were kept out of the end zone for the first time this season. Five of Boston College's 12 drives ended in punts, four in turnover on downs and two in three-and-outs.
Outside of what looked to be a bad hold on Duke's second extra point attempt of the day and turned into a Boston College two-point conversion, it was a clean day for Duke's special teams unit.
Kade Reynoldson had two punts for an average of 47 yards while KD Cotton handled punt return duties, returning two for an average of 14 yards. Gavin Strange made his field-goal attempts.
Manny Diaz and company had the Blue Devils ready for Boston College after they ran all over Georgia Tech. Duke was ready from start to finish and dominated for the whole 60 minutes.
Sheppard ran for a career-high and Duke single-game record five touchdowns, adding a new career long of 54-yards, and finished with a team-leading 129 all-purpose yards.
The Blue Devils closed October with a win and on a two-game winning streak after opening the month with back-to-back defeats. They now turn to the back half of the season, where they will no doubt want to build off their performance vs. the Eagles.
