A Tottenham Hotspur forward has won the club’s October Goal of the Month award for his late solo strike against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Nearly 2,500 supporters voted in the official club poll after the Frenchman sealed a memorable 2-0 derby win.

Winning the ball inside his own half with three minutes left at Stamford Bridge, Mathys Tel only had one thing on his mind. The young French forward put his head down, ran forty yards up the pitch, and buried a low shot into the corner. That late strike sealed a 2-0 win over Chelsea in West London. Unsurprisingly, Tottenham Hotspur fans have now voted it Goal of the Month for October.

Before Tel killed the game off, Tottenham had already taken control of the derby. Twenty minutes from time, Chelsea keeper Mike Penders punched a corner into his own net to hand the visitors the lead. Soon after, Blues playmaker Cole Palmer saw red, leaving the hosts with ten men. Tel then stepped up to score his first goal of the season after a bright preseason.

As per the official Tottenham website, 2,499 fans cast their votes across an eight-goal shortlist. To take the top spot, Tel had to beat out two standout senior strikes from the 3-1 home win over Coventry City. Both James Maddison’s curling opener and Omar Marmoush’s finish from that night made the fan poll. Even so, scoring a solo goal in enemy territory proved impossible to beat.

The shortlist also showed how many goals have flown in across the women and youth teams lately. Shekiera Martinez made the cut for her strike in the 6-1 cup win at Bristol City. Meanwhile, the Under 21s’ pair, Tyrese Hall and Elisha Sowunmi, earned spots for goals against Leicester and Middlesbrough. Under-18s duo Armend Muslika and Courtney Coffi Smith completed the list for strikes against Fulham.

Winning the October prize should give Tel plenty of belief heading into the winter run. After the game at Chelsea, the Frenchman called his goal a step forward while promising he can still do better for Roberto De Zerbi’s side. Having finally opened his account for the campaign, the attacker will want to add more goals soon. Next, Spurs travel to Elland Road to face Leeds United on Saturday.
