It was as bad a weekend as it could get for the Hoops fans, but Jordan is still not giving the Light Blues and their manager the credit they deserve.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan was unwilling to praise McInnes for how well he’s done at Ibrox since taking over. Instead, he slammed him for bottling the league title last season, without taking into account any of the other circumstances.
There were so many refereeing decisions that controversially went in Celtic’s favour, and it was hard to fault McInnes or his Hearts team for not winning the title. To begin with, they were never expected to challenge for the league, let alone win it, and he clearly overachieved there.
Jordan made a point that it’s sad that Rangers are being celebrated just for being competitive again rather than after they clinch the Scottish Premiership title.
He said: “Derek McInnes showed you last season when he had hearts in the box seat, he bottled it. So with due respect to the circumstances that surround him at Rangers is one thing.
“Isn’t it gotten to a sad set of circumstances where Rangers are becoming competitive again, when rather than the dominant force in the Scottish Premier League and rivalling Celtic, rather than hanging on to their coattails?
“And who cares if Rangers and Celtic are running for the obligatory win in the Scottish Premier League?
Jordan is completely ignoring the financial and structural rebuild at Ibrox since the new owners have come in and the massive financial chasm between the two Old Firm sides. What McInnes did last season deserves to be praised and not criticised, so he’s even got that part wrong.
Fans aren’t celebrating competitiveness because they lack ambition, but because they appreciate the fight required to claw back into contention after years of watching structural disadvantages lock them out of parity. Most Gers fans will be liking how things are going this season, and will be hoping for two or three pieces of silverware come the end of May.
