Dan Quinn provides concerning update on Commanders' running back

The Washington Commanders were thrilled to get back running back Jeremy McNichols. In his third season for Washington, McNichols began the 2026 season on injured reserve with a quad injury he sustained in training camp. After missing the first five games, McNichols returned for the Commanders’ Week 6 game in San Francisco.

After a bye week, McNichols was expected to share carries with Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler in Washington’s backfield-by-committee. However, after five carries for 21 yards and one reception for seven yards in Sunday’s 27-10 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, the veteran running back left with what appeared to be a lower-leg injury.

McNichols did not return to the game.

On Monday, head coach Dan Quinn met with the media and provided an update on McNichols. It’s not good.

“Yes. So, he does have a midfoot injury,” Quinn said. "I’m concerned it’s serious. They’re gonna do some more scans as we get through tomorrow. But it’s enough that we’re concerned today. I’ll give you an update as it goes to Wednesday, but it’s something that the team for sure is concerned with.”

Tashan Reed of The Washington Post reported that McNichols is expected to miss multiple months.

This is tough news for Washington and McNichols. The 10-year veteran has found an important role with the Commanders. He does a little bit of everything — and well. He’s a good runner and receiver out of the backfield, and he’s also excellent in pass protection. McNichols also plays an integral role on special teams.

You also feel for McNichols. He turns 31 in December, and after bouncing around the NFL, he has found a home in Washington. He's an outstanding teammate and valuable contributor. The Commanders already have starting back Jacory Croskey-Merritt on injured reserve.

Washington currently has veteran Craig Reynolds and the 2025 Saints’ sixth-round pick Devin Neal on the practice squad. With McNichols' injury, the Commanders have only White and Ekeler on the 53-man roster.
