West Indies produced a commanding performance to defeat Bangladesh by eight wickets in the opening Test of their two-match series on Saturday. A brilliant bowling effort from captain Roston Chase and Jomel Warrican in the second innings, followed by an authoritative batting display from Brandon King and John Campbell, helped the visitors complete a comfortable chase of 170 runs with a day to spare.

The victory handed West Indies a 1-0 lead in the series and highlighted their ability to adapt to challenging conditions in Bangladesh. While Bangladesh showed some resistance with the bat, they ultimately struggled to put enough runs on the board to challenge the visitors.

Jomel Warrican and Roston Chase restricts Bangladesh to 142

Bangladesh resumed Day 4 at 79/6, holding a slender lead of just over 100 runs. With Jaker Ali and Nayeem Hasan still at the crease, the hosts needed a substantial partnership to give their bowlers something to defend. However, West Indies quickly broke through as Warrican dismissed Jaker, who edged one behind to Chase at slip. Warrican also removed Hasan Mahmud, while Chase continued to trouble the Bangladesh batting lineup.

Nayeem, meanwhile, displayed considerable determination at the crease. Despite losing partners around him, he remained focused on extending the innings and eventually registered his maiden Test half-century. His resistance ended when he attempted to attack Chase, handing the West Indies captain his fifth wicket of the innings. Chase finished with impressive figures of 5/36, while Warrican claimed 4/63. Bangladesh were eventually dismissed for 142, setting West Indies a target of 170 runs to win the opening Test.

Brandon King and John Campbell put West Indies in control

Chasing 170, West Indies received exactly the kind of start they needed from their opening combination. King and Campbell adopted an aggressive approach and refused to allow Bangladesh’s spinners to dictate proceedings. The opening pair negotiated the initial overs before gradually increasing the scoring rate. Campbell particularly took the attack to Mehidy Hasan Miraz, collecting a boundary and a six in quick succession.

Their partnership continued to flourish despite a couple of rain interruptions. King brought up his half-century with three consecutive boundaries, although Bangladesh missed an opportunity to dismiss him when a chance at second slip was put down.

The opening stand eventually ended at 112 when Campbell was dismissed for 49. Shoriful Islam produced a delivery that moved back into the batter, resulting in an inside edge. King continued his impressive innings, receiving support from Tagenarine Chanderpaul before Kavem Hodge joined him at the crease.

Chanderpaul’s dismissal briefly raised hopes of a Bangladesh comeback, but King ensured there were no further complications. The right-handed batter remained unbeaten on 81, while Hodge contributed valuable runs at the other end. The duo guided West Indies to 170/2, completing the chase at a healthy scoring rate of nearly five runs per over. West Indies eventually secured an eight-wicket victory with a day remaining in the contest.

Despite Bangladesh’s efforts, the visitors dominated the crucial stages of the match. Warrican was named Player of the Match after finishing with nine wickets across the two innings.
