Pedro Neto provides update on Chelsea future and reveals Xabi Alonso's role in transfer decision

Pedro Neto has enjoyed a brilliant start to the season, establishing himself as one of the first names on the Chelsea teamsheet.

Pedro Neto has provided an update on his future at Chelsea following a 'crazy' transfer window. The 26-year-old winger had attracted interest from Al Hilal, as well as numerous Premier League clubs, during the summer, but the Blues worked hard to keep him at Stamford Bridge.

football.london understands that Chelsea were not actively looking to sell Neto, viewing him as an important option for Xabi Alonso. So, in an effort to fend off potential suitors and, ultimately, reflect the inflated market for wide-men, the Portugal international was given a £100million price tag.

The Blues managed to hold on to Neto, who quickly repaid the faith his new manager had shown in him. In the absence of Marco Palestra, who suffered an injury in the build-up to the opening weekend of the Premier League season, the Portuguese star was deployed as a wing-back.

Without throwing his toys out of the pram, he made an excellent impression, establishing himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet. Then, in September, Neto was rewarded with a new deal, extending his stay in west London until June 2032.

The Chelsea star has continued to catch the eye, scoring four goals and providing one assist in nine appearances across all competitions, making it impossible for Alonso to replace him.

In an interview with The Times ahead of this weekend's clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, Neto thanked his fiancée, Carolina, for the role she played over the summer.

"She has been the base of emotional control," he said. "Maybe in the transfer window, I was a little bit crazy, because I wanted to solve things here. She helped me a lot. We feel like home here."

Neto added: "Always be hungry for more. This is the mentality the coach is trying to build around the team. I think the biggest point was the manager. He talked to me and explained what he wanted.

"He made sure that I felt like I was wanted by him. Then the owner [Behdad Eghbali], as well, made sure that I was happy here. I was really happy that we could agree [the contract].

"When you feel like you are appreciated, you always feel like home. That was the feeling that I had."

When Neto put pen to paper on his contract extension last month, he outlined his ambition to 'achieve a lot of things'. The Portuguese ace said: "From when I arrived, I have always felt like the people here helped me a lot.

"I feel like home here, I feel like I want to achieve more things here. I have had some good moments here as a group, and as an individual, and now I want to have more of those moments.

"I’m really excited because I think we can achieve a lot of things together."
