Preston North End face another difficult Championship test on Tuesday night as Sheffield United make the trip to Deepdale.
Chris Wilder’s side have started to find some momentum after a difficult opening to the campaign, collecting 10 points from their last five league matches.
The Blades have plenty of attacking quality capable of hurting Preston, particularly if Graham Alexander’s side continue to struggle defensively.
Here are three players North End will need to keep a close eye on.
The Republic of Ireland international will be a familiar face to Preston supporters, having previously spent time at Deepdale before moving on in search of regular first-team football.
Cannon remains a mobile centre-forward with good movement, an eye for goal and the ability to stretch opposition defences. His understanding of the Championship and previous experience at North End could make this an interesting return to face his former club.
With his willingness to run in behind and occupy defenders, Cannon could cause problems if Preston allow Sheffield United to play through the lines.
North End will need to remain compact and prevent him from finding space behind the defensive line.
The experienced Ghanaian forward brings plenty of quality and know-how to Sheffield United’s attacking options, with his physicality and intelligent movement making him a difficult opponent to contain.
Although not the most prolific goalscorer, Ayew offers excellent hold-up play and is particularly effective at bringing teammates into the game. He can use his strength to protect possession, draw defenders towards him and create opportunities for those around him.
Preston will need to prevent him from receiving the ball comfortably and avoid allowing him to draw defenders out of position, particularly with Cannon and Brereton Díaz looking to exploit the space around him.
The Chilean international is another attacking threat Preston will need to keep a close eye on, having recently opened his Championship account for Sheffield United with the winning goal against Wrexham.
A direct and powerful forward, Brereton Díaz offers plenty of pace, physicality and versatility in the final third. His ability to operate across the frontline, run in behind defenders and attack space makes him a difficult opponent to contain, particularly when given room to drive at the opposition.
He will arrive at Deepdale with confidence after finding the net on Friday night, and Preston cannot afford to give him the space to build on that performance.
Alexander’s side will need to be disciplined in their defensive shape and limit the opportunities for Sheffield United’s forwards to attack them in transition.
