Portishead Town Ladies claim 4-0 win over Sherborne

Happy to be back home at Bristol Road after a venture down to Cornwall the week prior, the Posset girls were fired up to get some more points on the board and extend their lead at the top of the league.

Sherborne, on the other hand, were looking for any points they could get their hands on.

A six-point deduction had left them stuck at the bottom of the table on -2 points overall, so even leaving the match with a draw could prove vital later on in the season.

The hosts wouldn't be looking to entertain any such compassion, however, as Portishead would take an early lead in the fifth minute through Mia Blazey.

A strong physical battle up the pitch and in the box from Annabel Bean left her defender on the floor, giving her ample time to pass across and find Blazey for a sharp finish.

Despite being quick off the mark, Portishead didn't immediately find a follow-up.

They may have been the more dominant side, but Sherborne were interrupting the build-up enough to slow the game down briefly.

Alanna Torrington came close to finding the second with a powerful shot from range, forcing a good save out of Sherborne's keeper, but it would be the in-form Mathilda Knight who eventually extended Portishead’s lead in the 20th minute.

A well-placed cross from Shannon Holloway made it to Knight at the back post.

The ball almost got away, leading to her taking a touch after winding up for a shot.

Whether intentional or not, the Sherborne defence had reacted to Matilda's fake shot and were now caught off guard, creating an easy opening to slot the ball away.

Sherborne were looking shaky off the back of this, and Portishead could smell blood in the water.

A flurry of attempts over the next few minutes kept the visitors hunkered down as the home side laid siege.

All of this would culminate in the 24th minute when three Portishead players went to tap a loose ball in at the same time, and all miraculously missed.

The ball was kicked away and out of the box in the hopes of a clearance, but young full-back Louise Mills would intercept it.

Having already scored two brilliant goals so far this season, Mills confidently struck the ball from 25 yards out and rifled it into the top left corner, firmly putting the game in Portishead’s hands.

The remainder of the half would be relatively uneventful, barring a couple of stoppages for injuries and some decent opportunities for Portishead.

As such, the scoreline would remain 3-0 at the break.

A fourth and final goal of the afternoon would come in the 53rd minute for Portishead yet again.

Whipped in from a corner by Blazey, the ball would reach Chelsea Heal at the back post, who in turn sent it net-bound with a bullet header to make it another goal for a full-back and 4-0 overall.

Portishead kept attacking right the way through, only allowing Sherborne to get their first shot on target in the 73rd minute, an attempt that was well saved by keeper Abi Footner.

In the end, Posset would start November with another three points earned, and make it three consecutive clean sheets in the process.

Next up for the girls is Gloucester City away as they look to start their league cup campaign this weekend, while at the same time preparing for a big match-up with Dulwich Hamlet in the FA Cup one week later.
