Is an Alex Scott transfer on the cards for Chelsea?

Anyone else feel like Alex Scott’s name has been everywhere this summer? The Bournemouth midfielder has become one of the more drawn-out transfer sagas heading into January, with Chelsea emerging as clear frontrunners – £100 million fee notwithstanding.

After all, Chelsea need a central midfielder since Enzo Fernandez completed a £125 million move to Manchester City, and Scott’s been identified early as the solution. First, they bid. Bournemouth say no. A late attempt to sign Lamine Camara also collapsed on deadline day. By September, we’d gone from methodically replacing that midfield pivot to spending budget elsewhere and hoping the squad would hold together long enough.

Then again, Bournemouth’s position has changed in the meantime. Initially, the Cherries made it clear Scott would be going nowhere in January, which is, arguably, a reasonable enough stance for a club navigating their first Europa League campaign. Replacing a player of his calibre mid-season is something to be avoided at all costs. But Scott has rejected the chance to become Bournemouth’s highest-paid player ever, and the club have now indicated they’d consider a sale in the region of £100 million.

According to Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips, Xabi Alonso has already spoken to Scott directly, as have several Chelsea players. Personal terms were provisionally agreed back in the summer. Scott, per Phillips, is “very keen” on the move. What’s left is the fee and whatever January chaos tends to generate around otherwise tidy deals.

Those keeping an eye on Premier League betting markets will know this one’s been generating odds movement for months. Chelsea have been here before with multiple summer bids and consistent contact with Scott’s representatives, while Alonso has made his preference clear: the maths needs to be mathing.

Chelsea aren’t alone, though. Liverpool are a genuine contender, with Andoni Iraola, Scott’s former manager at Bournemouth, reportedly keen to bring him to Liverpool. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Liverpool as potential January suitors following Bournemouth’s U-turn on their original stance. Real Madrid have reportedly joined the race too, though Chelsea are currently confirmed as leading the field according to The Telegraph. Scott’s current injury, which is a thigh problem picked up on England duty, adds another layer of uncertainty to any January timeline regardless of which club is ahead in the queue.

If we think back to the summer, what’s actually changed is the contract situation. Scott’s refusal to sign a new deal at the Vitality Stadium removed the option of Bournemouth retaining him on improved terms, and the club with it removed their own position of comfort. Now they’re weighing a January fee against the prospect of watching him walk away for nothing in 2028.

Scott has made 95 appearances for Bournemouth since his arrival from Bristol City in 2023, started 34 of his 37 Premier League appearances last season, scored on his first full England start in a 7-0 rout of Croatia, and – when fit – is about as complete a central midfielder as the Premier League has at 23. The pieces, on Chelsea’s side, are largely in place.
