Northampton Town manager Chris Hogg said he was "over the moon" with his side following their victory over fellow League Two strugglers Colchester United on Saturday.

Matty Warhurst's first goal for the club at Sixfields gave the Cobblers the perfect platform after nine minutes and Sam Hoskins flicked in a second five minutes after half-time to seal a 2-0 victory.

Northampton's much needed three points lifted the club out of the relegation zone and up to 19th in League Two, leapfrogging Colchester in the process.

It was Town's second win in three matches, backing up their win at Grimsby although they did lose 1-0 to Tranmere three days later, in which Hogg believed they played well.

"Some of the performance levels over the last couple of games has been closer to what we want and especially on Tuesday night [against Grimsby] when you don't get the result," Hogg told BBC Radio Northampton.

"It's been a really positive week to build the belief – I'm absolutely delighted and over the moon for the players.

"I thought you saw a team playing to win rather than playing not to lose, which is a big difference in the mindset. I'm saying it every day to the players, we have to stop playing football games not to lose. We have to play to win."

Hogg singled out striker Warhurst for praise. It was the 20-year-old's second league goal since his move from Manchester City's academy in the summer.

"[I'm] delighted for Matty. He's got to keep growing and keep believing in himself," he said.

"Some of his out of possession work was terrific - that was rewards for his efforts."

Following the takeover by Sports Alpha Capital, the club's new director Alexandre Pato was also in attendance on Saturday for the game against Colchester - a club he was also close to investing in earlier this year.

Hogg said he hoped the team's progress will have left an impression on the former AC Milan, Chelsea and Brazil forward who he added is becoming a lucky charm for his side.

"As I've said to Pato, he can come again because he was at the Newport game and we managed to win that one at home and we won again [on Saturday]," Hogg added.
