Gordon Elliott celebrated a 16/1 winner at Wexford on Sunday less than an hour after Brian Hayes won the opening race at Galway for Willie Mullins.

Two days after landing a 23/1 double at Cheltenham, Elliott was back among the winners in Ireland as Sam Ewing rode Scalpnagoon to success in the Jim And Kay Whitty Memorial Handicap Chase over 2m3½f, the second race on the card at Wexford.

The six-year-old got his head in front for the first time since landing a novice hurdle in January 2025, beating the Robert Tyner-trained Kobalt St Georges (11/2) by a head, with 7/2 favourite Watch The Weather a further half a length back in third.

It has been a week of celebration for Elliott, who got engaged to Kate Harrington, the youngest daughter of legendary trainer Jessica Harrington, a few days ago.

“It was at the start of the week that I proposed to Kate," the Meath trainer explained after his double success at Cheltenham on Friday.

“It was nothing fancy, just on the couch at home as I’m an ordinary man!

“We have been together for nearly eight years now. There have been a few hiccups along the way, but she is a great girl.”

Meanwhile, Hayes, the husband of Grand National history-making winner Rachael Blackmore, rode his second winner of the month in a 2m6f beginners chase at Galway.

The 38-year-old steered 10/11 favourite Chart Topper to a 17-length success over the Elliott-trained and Sam Ewing-ridden Will Do despite easing him down in the closing stages.

Chart Topper is trained by Willie Mullins, who looks Keeneland-bound this weekend, with Ethical Diamond set to defend his Breeders' Cup Turf crown after running out a shock winner of the race last year.
