One name linked with the vacant Sheffield Wednesday job has committed his future elsewhere.
The Owls are searching for the right person to take over the squad, and presumably, guide them to at least the play-offs this season.
Despite many thinking Dave Challinor was a dead cert for the job, the club are going about the process correctly, with several names from the UK and abroad being considered, per reports from The Star.
One name linked with the club earlier in the week was Dean Holden. GiveMeSport reported that the Hull City assistant manager was being considered by Sheffield Wednesday. However, it appears that he is likely already out of the running.
Alex Crook shared on his X that Holden has signed a new rolling contract at Hull City following his success at the club under Sergej Jakirović.
Holden joined the club ahead of the Tigers’ surprise promotion campaign. The side weren’t expected to be anywhere near the battle for the Premier League, but won in the play-off final against Middlesbrough.
They carried on defying the odds at the start of this season. After eight games, they are 10th, just three points off Chelsea in fifth. However, they’ve not won in six, but their good start has put them in a good position to beat the drop this season.
Challinor has been linked with the job ever since Simon Wilson came to the club. But five days on from the sacking of Henrik Pedersen, the club still hasn’t appointed a new manager. That’s not a bad thing; it shows they are going about things correctly, something that’s been missing at the club for so long.
In his piece for The Star, Alex Miller has shared:
“An as yet unknown number of interview candidates are under consideration for the Wednesday top job, with The Star of the understanding that the list includes names both with a domestic background and from overseas.
“Discussions are also believed to have been held with the assistant coaches of potential new bosses as the club seek to gain a holistic view of what potential coaching teams would offer. Beyond their football and coaching outlook, candidates’ leadership, communication ability and cultural alignment are believed to be among the processes’ priority attributes.”
The fact that overseas candidates are being considered does open up the door for more options. The majority of names being discussed so far are UK-based managers, with experience at this level.
Hiring non-UK managers has been a mixed bag for Wednesday. Carlos Carvalhal had great success, almost leading the club back to the Premier League. While Jos Lukhay failed miserably during his spell at Hillsborough.
With their next game on Sunday, it seems unlikely a new manager will be announced before then. If they are, then they won’t be taking charge of the game on Sunday, with Matt Hamshaw likely to carry on in temporary charge.
After the Blackpool game, Wednesday have Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup and then Accrington Stanley in the Jersey Mike’s Trophy. That seems like a good chance for a new manager to come in and assess players in both cups.
After those games, the Owls have a tough run, so time to prepare the squad beforehand will be useful. They play Plymouth Argyle, Oxford United, Reading, Leicester City, and Luton Town before Christmas, as well as a derby against Barnsley at Oakwell.
Whoever comes in will be hoping to hit the ground running against tough opposition.
