Wild’s Top Trade Target Refusing to Expand List

The Minnesota Wild have been in on Dylan Larkin from the VERY beginning. When the Detroit Red Wings center first asked out, Minnesota was one of just three teams he would accept a trade to, and the Wild have stayed on his list through every version since.

That list now sits at 10 teams: Florida, Minnesota, Vegas, Dallas, Washington, Carolina, Utah, Tampa Bay, New Jersey and Colorado. No Canadian team is on it. Meanwhile, Larkin is no longer playing for Detroit, a decision that got him suspended by the Red Wings without pay on Oct. 29.

Detroit interim general manager Shawn Horcoff hasn’t hidden what he wants. On Oct. 30, he told reporters that “with the teams that Dylan has on his list, it’s difficult to get something done,” and that an expanded list would make a deal easier.

Dylan Larkin won’t add teams to his trade list

This week, the Red Wings took that message straight to Larkin’s camp, but it doesn’t appear they got the answer they were looking for.

On Tuesday, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun (RDS, The Athletic) reported on the French-language network “Aux 4 coins de la LNH” that Larkin and his agent Pat Brisson have told the Wings that they will not be expanding his list of 10 teams. LeBrun’s segment on Larkin’s trade list is translated from French below the video.

“Shawn Horcoff, the GM of the Red Wings, contacted Larkin’s agents, Pat Brisson and Matt Williams, in the last few days to say, ‘I’ve tried everything with the 10 teams on your list and I can’t find a trade that makes sense for us. Please, would it be possible to add other teams?’

Because there are other teams, according to my information six to eight teams, outside the list of 10 that the Red Wings have talked with and think they could make a better trade with…

…According to my information, the answer, once again in the last few days, was no from Pat Brisson to the Red Wings. ‘We’ve already given you 10 teams. You’re capable of making a trade with those 10 teams.’ So right now, it’s a real poker game between the two sides.”

LeBrun named Montreal, Boston and Buffalo among the teams that remain interested in Larkin but aren’t on his list, and he mentioned Los Angeles as well. For now, none of them can get in unless Larkin changes his mind.

What it means for the Minnesota Wild

This is good news for the Minnesota Wild. If Larkin expands his list, the likelihood he lands here falls considerably. LeBrun has previously reported that Minnesota has made the most trade offers for Larkin of any team, but Detroit hasn’t bitten. Wild sources have even called Detroit’s ask unrealistic.

What Detroit gives up by waiting is a center with an $8.7 million cap hit through 2030-31. Larkin had two goals and four assists in 10 games before he stopped playing. Minnesota, meanwhile sits first in the Central Division at 11-3-3, after their victory Tuesday night.

Horcoff has said he’s prepared to wait as long as it takes for the right return. Larkin’s camp is making it clear they can wait too, and until one side moves, the MN Wild remain a favorite if Detroit ever budges
