Boundaries obliterated: the five highest-scoring One-Day Internationals in cricket history
England cricket
Harry Brook is making a habit of breaking records.

The traditional boundaries of 50-over cricket have been thoroughly redefined by aggressive modern tactics, smaller boundaries, and flat batting tracks. A prime example of this occurred in Rawalpindi, where a spectacular England vs Sri Lanka match produced a breathtaking 859 runs in a single day.

While England’s Harry Brook smashed the fastest-ever ODI double century off 114 balls to push his side to 429/4, Sri Lanka remarkably chased down the target with a ball to spare, finishing at 430/8.

Inspired by this recent masterpiece, we look at the top five highest-scoring, run-heavy matches in the history of Men’s ODIs, ranked by their combined aggregate totals.

1. South Africa vs Australia (Johannesburg, 2006) – 872 runs

Widely considered the greatest One-Day International ever played, this match set a monumental benchmark that has stood the test of time. Batting first, Ricky Ponting’s Australia became the first team to breach the 400-run barrier in an ODI, posting a seemingly invincible 434/4.

However, South Africa pulled off the unthinkable. Powered by a legendary 175 from Herschelle Gibbs and a captain’s knock of 90 by Graeme Smith, the Proteas chased the target down with one wicket remaining. This match ended with a world-record 872 runs across 99.5 overs.

2. England vs Sri Lanka (Rawalpindi, 2026) – 859 runs

The high-altitude drama in Rawalpindi slots straight into second place on the all-time list. England looked to have completely sealed the match after Harry Brook’s historic 202 propelled them to 429/4. Yet, Sri Lanka’s batting line-up responded with pure fearlessness.

Sublime knocks from Pavan Rathnayake (130), Pathum Nissanka, and Avishka Fernando kept them abreast of the required run rate. Janith Liyanage finished the game in style, hitting a crucial six off the penultimate delivery to seal a historic multi-wicket win.

3. India vs Sri Lanka (Rajkot, 2009) – 825 runs

Long before the Rawalpindi epic, India and Sri Lanka played out an absolute thriller in Rajkot. Virender Sehwag decimated the Sri Lankan bowling attack with a blazing 146 off 102 balls, guiding India to a massive first-innings total of 414/7.

Not to be outdone, Sri Lanka counter-attacked furiously behind Tillakaratne Dilshan’s majestic 160. Sri Lanka kept up with the pace but fell agonizingly short by just three runs, finishing at 411/8. The game ended with a combined aggregate of 825 runs.

4. India vs West Indies (Guwahati, 2026) – 811 runs

The year 2026 has been an extraordinary period for batting records. Just a month prior to the Rawalpindi showdown, India and the West Indies turned Guwahati into a paradise for power-hitters. The West Indies batted first and set up a daunting target, finishing their innings at 405 runs.

Driven forward by an unstoppable double-hundred (223*) from Shubman Gill, India paced their innings perfectly to successfully chase down the target, ending at 406 for the loss of few wickets. The match concluded with a staggering 811 runs on the scoreboard.

5. West Indies vs England (St. George’s, 2019) – 807 runs

Rounding out the top five is a classic Caribbean battle that saw the ball flying to all corners of Grenada. A fierce England batting unit anchored by Eoin Morgan’s century piled on a massive 418/6 in their 50 overs. The West Indies refused to go down quietly, launch-paded by a vintage, explosive 162 from Chris Gayle.

Despite the ‘Universe Boss’ hitting 14 towering sixes, the home side was eventually bowled out for 389 in the 48th over. It remains one of the most entertaining and fast-paced contests in modern cricket history, totaling 807 runs.
