Fan's view: Change needed after contrasting performances

On Saturday, we played with purpose, moved the ball quickly, and on the deck, and used the strengths, especially, of Calum Kavanagh and Favour Fawumni, who were excellent.

Giving Ollie Norburn the ball rather than have him watch it sail over his head made a massive difference with him and Tom Pett running the show in midfield.

It was good to watch from minute one with the forward line closing down the opposition high up the pitch and really putting them under pressure.

Kavanagh did what Kavanagh does and scored to get us started before an unlikely scorer in Jamie Robson doubled the lead. Fawumni scored a fine third and even when the Robins pulled one back on half time, I still wasn’t concerned.

Robson finished the rout off in the second half and three points were ours for the first time since August.

It made for an enjoyable drive home up north for me, hoping that the corner was turned and Micky Mellon had realised how these players need to be set up to make them tick.

However, we made things so much more difficult for ourselves at Walsall in the first half with poor defending - twice from Manny Monthe, though the second was a country mile offside - and a lack of most of what was good on Saturday.

Too often we were looking long again instead of trying to play football and, when we did try and pass the ball, it wasn’t finding a man in blue.

As has regularly been the case, it was all very flat and, once the third had gone in from a very dodgy penalty, the game was over, especially as - once again - the subs bench was without Josh Hawkes and Noah Chilvers, two players who could have given us that something different as we chased the game; more so when Walsall were rightly reduced to 10 men.

But, as it was, we didn’t create much at all and certainly didn’t get up a head of steam where we put together a sustained period of pressure.

Across the game, we did miss chances, with Kane Drummond especially lacking in that area. But, all in all, it was another disappointing performance.

The likes of Monthe and Robson are struggling at the minute, and that really sums us up. They were superb last season but are not finding anywhere near those heights.

We have to ask why?

We’re nearly a quarter of the way through the season and we are fourth from bottom of the table. It’s not good enough and something needs to change to get this turned around, and fast.
