Chelsea Transfer News: Chelsea have made a promising start under Xabi Alonso, with their 2-0 win over Manchester United adding to victories against Bournemouth and Brighton. The Blues have shown their attacking threat, including a five-goal burst in the opening 15 minutes of matches.
However, defeats against Arsenal and Tottenham exposed problems with consistency, while Liverpool ended their EFL Cup run in the fourth round after a penalty shootout. Alonso has given Chelsea more attacking intent, but the results still highlight areas that need attention.
That mixed record leaves the manager balancing immediate results with the longer-term construction of his attack. Cole Palmer remains a central creative figure, while Morgan Rogers has impressed since arriving for a reported £138 million.
The England international has recorded four goals and four assists in eight matches, giving Alonso another midfielder who can carry the ball, create chances and contribute in the final third. Alongside Pedro Neto and Estêvão, those options already give Chelsea considerable attacking depth.
Against that backdrop, TEAMtalk transfer insider Graeme Bailey reports that Chelsea are monitoring Florian Wirtz, with Alonso said to favour a move if the German becomes available. However, an update from Space | ™ claims Wirtz and his father and agent, Hans-Joachim, have ruled out a Stamford Bridge switch. Chelsea’s interest may be genuine, but the reported rejection makes any immediate approach difficult to pursue.
The 23-year-old has recorded two assists in nine Premier League appearances for Liverpool, alongside one goal and one assist in three Champions League outings. His close control, vision and movement between the lines would suit Alonso’s 3-4-2-1, a system the pair previously used at Bayer Leverkusen. Yet Palmer and Rogers already occupy influential positions behind the striker, while Wirtz’s league return gives Chelsea further reason to consider the cost carefully.
Chelsea should respect the player’s reported position and avoid forcing a deal that could consume a huge part of their budget. Rogers has already delivered four goals and four assists, while Palmer remains central to the attack. Another expensive creator could create selection problems without addressing the team’s other needs.
The hierarchy would be better served by strengthening central midfield, where Caicedo and Lavia carry significant responsibility. More depth in that area would give Alonso more control and protect the attacking players from having to compensate for midfield weaknesses.
Wirtz’s quality is clear, and Alonso’s previous relationship with him adds appeal, but Chelsea have already committed heavily to Rogers. Unless the German changes his stance and a sensible fee becomes possible, the club should direct their resources elsewhere.
