After last year’s 2–10 campaign, many called for Boston College football head coach Bill O’Brien’s termination.
But sitting at 4–3 entering last week's matchup at Duke, Eagles fans felt a sense of reinvigoration in O’Brien’s project.
That all came crashing back down to earth with the hard-to-stomach loss in Wallace Wade Stadium, which has dealt a massive blow to BC's chances of reaching a bowl game.
Before the loss, the Eagles possessed a clear path to six wins and bowl eligibility.
The most ideal route looked to be taking at least two victories from Duke, Florida State, and Syracuse, with road matchups against fourth-ranked Notre Dame for "The Holy War" and top-ranked Miami likely resulting in losses.
Now, as the Eagles approach their home matchup against the Seminoles on Saturday, a clear wrench has been thrown in the plan.
With the blowout loss to the Blue Devils, BC now must go two-for-two against FSU and Syracuse, assuming that both contests against Notre Dame and Miami will not result in BC's favor — which is going to be the consensus among fans, national media, and the oddsmakers.
Florida State, which recently fired head coach Mike Norvell after seven seasons, will come to Chestnut Hill, Mass., with Rick Stockstill at the helm, which leaves much ambiguity around Saturday’s matchup, as what was already a must-win game for BC has now been clouded by what could be a newly-redefined FSU team.
It is unclear whether the Seminoles will be revamped in the post-Norvell era after their 3–5 start to the season.
However, the Eagles will look to add to their misery and extend that losing streak to four games as FSU deals with the adjustment adjust to the coaching change.
Stockstill, an experienced coach with a career record of 113–111 from his tenure at Middle Tennessee in Conference USA, will hand off full play-calling autonomy to offensive coordinator Tim Harris Jr., who has the Seminoles averaging 30.6 points per game as both the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.
BC will look to attack a vulnerable FSU defense that has allowed 36 or more points in its last three games — the Seminoles have been without key defensive players in Quindarrius Jones and Blake Nichelson for the season.
As for regional rival Syracuse, who supplied BC’s only in-conference win in the 2025 season, the Orange will be journeying to the Heights on Nov. 21 looking for revenge as they also pursue bowl eligibility.
Syracuse are hot off a ranked upset of then-No. 19 SMU this past Saturday, an unexpected result for the Orange, who have struggled in ACC play until recently.
With the season seemingly over after a grim 0–4 start to conference play, Syracuse has begun to show signs of life as they enter their back slate of games, and a hot, late-season, Fran Brown-led football team could be dangerous for Boston College, as the Orange notoriously took down No. 6 Miami 42–38 in the last game of the 2024 regular season.
It remains to be seen whether O’Brien’s future is at stake, but a bowl game berth will certainly play in the skipper's favor. With that being said, it will be a long and trying road for the Eagles as they search for bowl eligibility for the first time since 2024.
