David Moyes has led Everton to a very respectable start during the 2026/27 campaign, yet there remains a feeling that a change of manager may be required to reach new levels.
There is an argument that David Moyes has taken Everton as far as he can right now, and to kick on, a more progressive, less reactionary, and bolder boss would be required.
Moyes is being eyed up by Celtic as their Martin O’Neill successor, which could be perfect timing for Everton to also move on. If this happens, Lee Carsley may have just shown why he deserves to be heavily considered.

Celtic are eyeing David Moyes with his Everton contract expiring next year… thoughts? 🤔
Currently, the head coach of England U21, Carsley, is doing a stand-up job, which also saw him impress as the senior England head coach. Carsley also has the benefit of being a former Everton midfielder, and after being invited to the Hill Dickinson this month, his comments spoke volumes about his feelings about the club.
Speaking to club media, Carsley spoke glowingly about Everton.
“It’s always good to come back to visit Everton, and obviously looking forward to the game. It’s always great to get invited back.”
Continuing, Carsley hailed Harrison Armstrong, Tyrique George, and Tyler Dibling, with whom he has worked with England U21.
“I’ve really enjoyed working with them. Obviously, the players that you spoke about are all really high-potential players that are doing really well at Everton, and are desperate to play and desperate to do well.
“It was brilliant to have them in camp, and obviously having that Everton connection also, it’s always nice to see players at a club that you know, I’ve got a special place for, do so well.”
Carsley got great performances from the Everton trio, and if he were appointed, there is a good chance he would prioritise using the young English talent at his disposal.
In an eventual Moyes successor, the Toffees will want to see someone who plays a more exciting brand of football, uses the young talent at the club, and, importantly, really cares about the club.
Of these requirements, Carsley ticks all of the above, and it highlights how suitable a candidate he is. In fact, it is almost obvious that he should be a frontrunner.
It is a job he would take and a leap into coaching at a very high level, but Everton have tried all kinds of coaches in recent years; never has it been an exciting coach who has succeeded internationally. It would almost be a very Spanish appointment.
This likely won’t be the last time we hear Carsley and Everton in the same breath, and it wouldn’t be surprising at all if he is considered a potential successor. It would be an exciting appointment.
