The Kansas City Chiefs lost 20-3 at the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in their first loss of the season. What made the loss more concerning was that Kansas City managed just three points, putting their offense under the microscope.
The underwhelming display from Kansas City star quarterback Patrick Mahomes led former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel, a two-time Super Bowl champion, to voice his concerns on the “Say What Needs To Be Said” podcast on Monday.
“Seems like the Patrick Mahomes magic is starting to slowly drift away. Biggest decline I see in Patrick Mahomes is his ability to be effectively passing the football down the field. Not too much of that is happening anymore: passing 20 yards or more down the field for Patrick Mahomes. He isn’t that effective like he once was,” Samuel said (Timestamp: 1:05).
“They have to be very, very consistent on offense, making those passes 10 yards or less down the field. Tom Brady was very good at that; that’s what made Brady who he was and be able to win all those championships. Andy Reid has to find a way to get to Kenneth Walker going to help Patrick Mahomes out.”
Kansas City’s three points against the Seahawks were the joint second-lowest tally the franchise has achieved in the 153 games started by Patrick Mahomes, alongside the fewest red zone drives (0) and second-fewest yards (213).
After a long 274-day hiatus from the NFL, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes started in Week 1 with a lot of expectations from the football community.
Seven weeks into the season, the two-time MVP-winning signal-caller has thrown for 1,474 yards and nine 9 touchdowns, completing 124 of 191 (64.9%).
The last two outings have arguably been Mahomes’ worst performances this season; he recorded no touchdowns and threw an interception in each game. While the Chiefs (5-1) still occupy the top spot in the AFC West, Mahomes needs to amp up his output for them to improve offensively.
