Chelsea Keep Tabs On £86m Arsenal Defender: Should Arteta Consider Selling?
Chelsea Flag Graphic

Arsenal have built a defence capable of supporting Mikel Arteta’s demanding approach, with players expected to defend aggressively while helping the team control possession. That balance has become central to their progress, particularly when opponents press high and leave little room for defenders to play forward.

Riccardo Calafiori has become an important part of that structure since joining from Bologna in 2024. The Italian can defend at left-back or move into central areas during possession, giving Arteta another way to create passing options and numerical advantages in midfield. His willingness to carry the ball forward adds a different dimension to Arsenal’s build-up.

The 23-year-old remains under contract until 2029, leaving the Gunners in a strong negotiating position. His versatility is important, too, with Jurriën Timber, Piero Hincapié and Myles Lewis-Skelly offering alternative defensive options across different roles.

Chelsea’s interest, however, has reportedly persisted

According to Transfer Feed, citing information shared by journalist Simon Phillips, the Blues retain some interest in Calafiori. Their admiration reportedly dates back to his Bologna days, and Chelsea also explored the possibility of signing him while Arsenal negotiated his transfer. Phillips has not indicated that the defender feels unhappy in north London or wants to leave.

The report suggests a potential valuation of around £86m, equivalent to €100m. However, that figure represents a reported estimate rather than a confirmed asking price, and no reliable weekly wage demand has emerged.

Arsenal transfer news: Should Arsenal consider selling Calafiori for £86m?

From Arsenal’s perspective, selling a key defender to a domestic rival would require an exceptional offer and a clear replacement plan. Calafiori’s ability to step into midfield helps Arteta change the team’s shape without sacrificing a defender in the final line, while his physical presence gives Arsenal another option against direct attacks.

His reported 2026/27 figures strengthen the case for keeping him. Across seven Premier League appearances, he has played 590 minutes, scored once and supplied two assists, with an 86% passing accuracy from 225 attempts. Against Bayern Munich on October 21, he completed 29 accurate passes and made three clearances during Arsenal’s 2-2 Champions League draw.

In my view, £86m would still leave Arsenal with a difficult decision. That money could fund improvements elsewhere, but replacing Calafiori’s combination of defensive aggression, progressive passing and positional flexibility would prove challenging. With his contract running until 2029 and no reported desire to leave, Arsenal have little reason to entertain Chelsea’s interest unless the defender’s circumstances change substantially.
