This is where the match was lost as it ends Newcastle 0 Everton 1

Another match lost in midfield.

Everton seemed to have at least one extra player nearly all evening.

They used the ball better and with accurate finishing would have scored twice before half-time.

Newcastle, perhaps nervous of throwing men forward after being exposed last Thursday, rarely threatened. Our midfield and defence still looked scarily open, however.

Hall and Dedic were apparently being expected to play simultaneously in defence and attack, with predictable results when possession was turned over.

The first save either keeper had to make fell to Lukas Hornicek just after the interval. He let a routine shot slide under his body. Barry couldn’t miss and the officials did the rest, deciding a dubious challenge on Schar in the build-up was legal.

Hornicek prevented Dewsbury-Hall from doubling the lead, then did well to block a Branthwaite header.

On 64 minutes, Steur and Wissa replaced Gonzalez and Willock. Within two minutes we nearly levelled but Elanga’s point-blank shot rolled along the line before being cleared.

As the game became spread, Schar stopped a second Barry tap-in with a great but risky challenge. Murphy and Ramsey replaced Elanga and Joelinton with 15 minutes left. Ramsey was a yard wide from hitting the jackpot on 79 minutes but still Pickford had not been extended.

The save he made from a weak 20-yarder by Wissa was as easy as Everton made their victory look. Conversely, United struggled to do much right.

Pickford finally earned his wage by kicking clear a Wissa snap shot after good work down the left by Toure, the last sub.

Deep into stoppage time, Ramsey was shown two yellow cards in quick succession, the second for an ugly tackle.

The bumps on the road are becoming bigger and more frequent.
