Newcastle United travel to London to take on Crystal Palace this afternoon, and both teams are in a similar situation when it comes to injuries.
Newcastle still have five players on their injury list, although a couple could return for this game. Palace also have five out, with a couple being assessed. Neither team has any suspensions.
Here is the rest of the team news.
First, here is the good news. Matthias Jaissle confirmed that Anthony Elanga could play a part in today’s game after recovering from a hamstring injury.
Speaking in his press conference, Jaissle said: “Anthony has trained this week and worked really hard. He won’t be able to play 90 minutes, but he is hopefully ready, at least, to be able to join the squad.”
Jacob Ramsey is also recovering from a hamstring injury and, although he is making progress, Jaissle said that that the midfielder may not be available for this game.
“I am happy Jacob Ramsey is back on the pitch. We need to take it step-by-step with him, manage his load management, we don’t want to take too many risks.
“I am pleased that slowly we are getting the players back and the next question is the physical level.”
Now the bad news. Ewen Jaouen and Tino Livramento are both out with hamstring and knee injuries respectively. Matias Fernandez-Pardo is a doubt. He was taken off during the game against Aston Villa after becoming ill, and Jaissle confirmed that the young Belgian had missed training during the week.
“Matias still has some issues health-wise, so he can only train partially and hopefully he can make it at the weekend.”
Sean Steur has been an unused substitute for the last couple of games, and his absence has raised questions after he excelled against Hull City before the international break. Jaissle addressed those concerns at his press conference.
“We are all sure, the whole club, the coaching staff, and the players, what great potential Sean has. He has shown that already and he showed, like many other lads, there are ups and downs and this is normal.
“Now it is time he is getting that confidence, that maturity throughout training sessions, training weeks, and we see it as a long-term project.
“Nico [González] is doing good in that position but that is the competition. We are happy with his [Steur] progress.”
The Eagles have a couple of players with long-term injuries. Chadi Riad Dnanou has a knee injury that he suffered at the start of the season, and Quinten Timber picked up a hamstring injury before the midweek Europa League tie against Beşiktaş. Neither have a return date.
Takehiro Tomiyasu has a leg injury and Pierre Sage confirmed that the former Arsenal man “will be out until the next international break.”
There is better news for Palace regarding Dean Henderson, who had an ankle injury. Sage confirmed that the goalkeeper had resumed training and could be in the matchday squad.
The only other name on Palace’s injury list is striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, who has a knock and will be assessed.
One player confirmed to be returning is Axel Disasi. Disasi has completed a three-match suspension, which he received after getting a straight red card for a bad challenge during Palace’s 3-2 defeat against Ipswich Town last month.
