Commanders GM Adam Peters discusses 2026 NFL trade deadline

The Washington Commanders have been on the phone this week regarding NFL trades.

The NFL Trade deadline for the 2026 season is Tuesday, November 10, at 4 p.m. ET. How about that? Election Day is next Tuesday, and the following Tuesday comes the deadline for the Washington Commanders and all other NFL teams looking to make trades during this 2026 season.

Commanders GM Adam Peters, during his weekly appearance with the “Sports Junkies” on 106.7 The Fan, wasn’t shy about admitting that Washington has been on the phones quite a bit as the trade deadline approaches.

“You’re right, there are a lot of phone calls,” Peters said. “Our staff is making a ton of phone calls. We’ve talked to all of the other 31 teams, and I've talked to a ton of GMs. There’s only a handful of times during the year where you can really make transactions for your team.”

This week, the Titans sent stud defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons to the Chicago Bears in a deal that includes two first-round draft choices. When Peters was asked about it, he praised Simmons for his play and his contract and conveyed that the Bears believe they can contend, so “they are all in." Peters was describing the Bears as clear 'buyers,' willing to give up future draft capital for a player they believe can improve their chances to contend this year.

“Obviously you can trade for guys in Week 1, but there’s not a lot of teams who are willing to trade their guys in Week 1. So, you have a few times during the year where you can really make some additions or transactions. This is one of those, so you want to take advantage of that if something comes up that can help your team.”

With wide receiver Terry McLaurin out for the year, and as Washington’s top receiver, Peters was asked if he is interested in adding another receiver this week. “You guys are going to say this is coach speak and all of that, but we’re looking at everything. And any position on your team where we can make ourselves better, for the present and the future, we’re always going to look into that.”

On the other side of the coin, the Titans are going nowhere, so they demonstrated they were sellers in this 2026 market. They are selling a good player for future draft capital. As were the Colts a few days earlier, sending guard Quenton Nelson to the Seahawks for a third-round and fifth-round choice.

The guys didn’t ask Peters about being a seller, and I noticed he kept the focus on being a buyer without explicitly distinguishing between the two. Summing up his stance currently, Peters offered, “Any position you can think of, if there’s an opportunity for us to get better. If it’s an opportunity to get a good player, at a price you think is fair, then you can pull the trigger on that.”

The Commanders have two games prior to the deadline. If they win those two, that would increase the odds, Peters might want to trade for a player. If the Commanders were to close and would be 1-6-1, then by all means, Peters should then be looking to trade some veterans for future draft choices.
