The 2022 game has grown its own tribe of fans, who participate in tournaments

The 2022 board game shot to popularity, growing its own tribe of fans, who participate in tournaments and on the mobile app.

Speaking to The Athletic, the Frenchman spoke about why he rejected a huge offer to sell the game: “The adventure isn’t about money.

“It’s about building something, creating jobs and opportunities.”

Instead of selling up, Saint-Maximin, 29, wants to draw in even more developers to work alongside him.

Each of those involved in the Helios company are set to be offered a stake in the business in return for their investment.

On Friday, Saint-Maximin jumped on Instagram to clarify his decision to turn down the massive sum after his fans were left baffled.

He said: “With a billion euros, maybe we can talk, but we’re still a long way from there!

“For now, don’t be shocked, it’s still just a proposal and it was rejected for several reasons.

“I much prefer that [potential buyers] invest in the project’s capital, rather than selling them my game entirely.”

In July 2023, Saint-Maximin made the move to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli after signing a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

He joined ranks with the likes of Roberto Firmino, Riyad Mahrez, and Edouard Mendy before a loan switch to Fenerbahce the next year.

A stint at Mexico’s CF America followed, before he made a move to Lens as a free agent, before his current MLS side Charlotte.

Saint-Maximin, with seven France caps, said: “Rest assured, I’ve already earned €45m (£37.6m) net in three years in Saudi Arabia, so a €26m (£22m) offer isn’t going to make me tremble!”

“I spent a lot of time imagining this game, creating its rules and designing it.

“I cannot abandon this entire vision for mere financial interests.

“I’m doing this project for the people, not to further line my own pockets.”
