Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is among those to have paid tribute to Jesus de Miguel after his tragic death playing for CD Tenerife on Monday. The striker suffered a serious injury in a Spanish second tier clash when he was caught by a flying knee from Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono.

In the aftermath of the collision, Tenerife released two statements with the first confirming he had been stabilised. The second announcement, which was released in the early hours of Tuesday morning, stated that his neurological condition had worsened, however.

And just a few hours later, the club announced the tragic news that De Miguel had died. That full statement read: "Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m., of Jesús de Miguel Alameda.

"There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness. We stand alongside his devastated family, alongside his loved ones, alongside all of tinerfeñismo that today weeps for this cruel outcome.

"The family of Jesús de Miguel thanks each and every one of the expressions of support received, and likewise requests, from the heart, the utmost respect for their privacy in these terrible moments."

De Gea was one of the first to pay tribute as he replied to their announcement on social media with a broken heart and hands together emoji.

Fellow Spaniard Gerrard Pique, who is the owner of Andorra and was in attendance on Monday, replied: "I am sorry with all my soul. Rest in peace, Jesús." Liverpool, Norwich City, Ajax, Napoli and Marseille were the European sides to respond.

Tributes from Spanish football clubs have also poured in with Andorra, who were the team up against Tenerife earlier this week, and upcoming opponents Badajoz issuing messages.

The latter's social media post read: "From CD Badajoz, we wish to express our regret over the passing of the footballer Jesús de Miguel Alameda.

"We would like to extend to @CDTOficial and to his entire family and loved ones our most sincere condolences and support during these very difficult times. A strong hug."

Andorra wrote: "With broken hearts and devastated, we want to send our most sincere condolences to the family of Jesús de Miguel, to all his teammates, friends, and to CD Tenerife Rest in peace."

They had already sent best wishes to De Miguel in the aftermath of the incident which saw their second division clash abandoned.

The score was level at 2-2 when the forward suffered his injury with reports in Spain claiming he suffered a cardiac arrest on the way to hospital before being placed in an intensive care unit.

De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 and was key to their promotion from the Spanish third division with 11 goals from 29 games. He had not started a game this season but had made several substitute cameos.
