How Dave Challinor’s Sheffield Wednesday Could Lineup
Sheffield Wednesday poppy display vs Blackpool

Dave Challinor was confirmed as the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday morning. The new Owls boss was at Hillsborough as his new side drew 1-1 with Blackpool.

Challinor has long been linked with the Wednesday job, even before Henrik Pedersen was sacked. That was mainly because of his relationship with Simon Wilson, with the pair enjoying a successful spell at Stockport County.

Now they’ll be hoping they can replicate that success at Wednesday, with the first task being getting the club back to the Championship.

Talk about how Sheffield Wednesday could line up under DC has already started. The former Bury player is known for playing a 3-4-2-1 formation, something Wednesday fans saw their side play against Blackpool.

We’ve put together the best 11 Challinor could field in that formation, should everyone be fit enough to play.

GK – Joe Lumley

Ashley Maynard-Brewer has been a good stand-in since Joe Lumley picked up an injury. The only real mistake he has made came against Blackpool, letting the ball go underneath him.

Lumley will likely be the number one when he is back, but Challinor might be keen to bring in someone of his own when he gets the chance.

RWB – Yan Valery

Yan Valery is a great option when he plays right wingback. He hugs the touchline well and is always available as an outlet.

Jordi Liongola will be an interesting backup when he is fully fit. Wednesday fans haven’t seen a lot of him since he signed, but his statistics last season are certainly exciting to say the least.

RCB – Di’Shon Bernard

The return of Di’Shon Bernard has been like a new signing for the Owls. He’s been solid since returning to the squad but picked up a knock against Notts County.

When he is back, he’ll likely go straight back in the side and be a key player for the side. The key, though, is making sure he isn’t overused too early again.

CB – Liam Cooper

Liam Cooper has been one of the standout performers this season. His experience is a great asset to Challinor, and playing in the centre of a three allows him to be the leader of the backline.

Ernie Weaver did a good job there on Sunday and will likely get game time as the season goes on, to help protect those struggling with fitness.

LCB – Sil Swinkels

Sil Swinkels hasn’t played much football for Wednesday this season, and when he did return to the starting 11 on Sunday, he got sent off. Despite that, he is a talented young defender that the club can nurture and potentially sell on for profit in the future.

Playing alongside experienced defender Cooper will definitely help his development this season.

LWB – Max Lowe

Max Lowe’s return to fitness has been timely as well. On Sunday, Wednesday fans got to see him in his more natural position for most of the first half, before he returned to centre half after the sending-off.

Like Valery, he is great at hugging the touchline and offering an outlet out wide when needed.

CM – Billy Mitchell

Since joining from Millwall, Billy Mitchell has shown glimpses of his quality but hasn’t been too consistent.

He’s currently got a knock, but when he is back, he could be a great tool in the Challinor machine, providing cover for the defence and starting attacks.

CM – Jaden Heskey

Alongside Mitchell, we’ve gone for Jaden Heskey. The on-loan Man City player has done well in the games he’s played. He’s professional in his job defensively and can carry the ball, as well as pick out good passes into those further forward.

Some might be shocked to not see Barry Bannan in the 11, but having him as an option from the bench, to play deeper or further forward, is a weapon for DC.

RF – Callum Slattery

Callum Slattery has played in several positions since signing but has always looked the best centrally, behind the striker.

On Sunday he was great on the half-turn and was a nuisance dropping into gaps between the midfield and defenders.

LF – Louie Barry

Arguably the most exciting thing about Challinor’s appointment is the fact he always gets the best from Louie Barry.

He was starting to find his feet before his injury, but with his old boss now in charge, he could be the key to Wednesday finishing in the play-offs, or higher.

ST – Davis Keillor-Dunn

He’s starting to show his goalscoring threat and, like Slattery, is another who looks better centrally.

When Barry is back, he is likely to move into the striker spot, making runs beyond defenders, but also dropping deep at times, allowing Slattery and Barry to make runs past him into the space he has vacated.

Mason Burstow has shown some good signs in recent games; he is another great option from the bench when rotation is needed.
