Ben Johnson provides injury rehab update on Bears S Coby Bryant

The Chicago Bears have dealt with a number of injuries on the defensive side of the ball this season, but the loss os safety Coby Bryant was a brutal blow before the start of the 2026 season.

Bryant suffered a knee injury back in training camp that required surgery, and he was expected to miss four to six months, putting his estimated return around early December, which would be big as Chicago looks to make a playoff push down the stretch.

Bears head coach Ben Johnson was asked about Bryant's progress, and he said the next month will tell the team a lot about his recovery and whether he can return. With the original 4-6 month timeline, Johnson said Bryant is "on track," but the next few weeks will be key.

“From what I understand he’s right on track," Johnson said, "…over the next month, that’ll go a long way to see whether we can get him back his year or not.”

Johnson added that Bryant will start running on land in the "near future," although he's still not quite ready to attempt change of direction movement, which would be the pivotal step to getting him back on the field.

On the same day, Bryant also took to socials to discuss his rehab process, and it certainly sounds like he's gearing up for a return later this year.

With Bryant sidelined, first-round rookie Dillon Thieneman has been the team's top safety, and one of their best defensive players through the first seven weeks of the season. Cam Lewis and the recently-released Xavier Woods have filled Bryant's spot opposite Thieneman. But if Chicago can get Bryant back in time for a late playoff push, it would be huge for Dennis Allen's defense.
