Moorhead’s top-ranked Class 6A football team may have to chase a state championship without one of the state’s best players.

Senior wide receiver David Mack suffered a potentially season-ending injury in the Spuds’ 64-29 first-round playoff win over Coon Rapids on Friday, according to the Star Tribune. The severity of the injury has not been disclosed.

Mack left the game in the first half with an apparent upper-body injury and did not return. The Star Tribune reported that he stayed in the game for a time before asking to be taken out.

Before leaving, Mack helped his teammate make history. He caught the 23-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Jett Feeney that broke Joe Mauer’s top classification record for touchdown passes in a season, then added a 15-yard score for a 14-0 lead. He finished with five catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns.

Mack leads Minnesota with 24 receiving touchdowns this season and has 69 catches for 1,230 yards through nine games, according to the Star Tribune. Last season he set a state record with 121 receptions, adding 1,607 yards and 26 touchdowns as Moorhead reached the Class 6A championship game. The Spuds fell to Edina 42-35 in a record-breaking Prep Bowl.

He is the state’s top-rated wide receiver prospect by 247sports.com. Mack committed to the Golden Gophers in March and is one of four Moorhead players in Minnesota’s 2027 recruiting class. He is a three-star prospect and the sixth-best player in Minnesota in the Class of 2027. He is one of eight commits from Minnesota in the Golden Gophers’ 2027 recruiting class.

The Spuds (9-0) are one of the top overall seed in Class 6A, and they host No. 4 Prior Lake in Round 2 at 6 p.m. Friday at Jim Gotta Stadium.

Moorhead will have help returning. Leading rusher and Golden Gopher commit Taye Reich missed the Coon Rapids game, but coach Kevin Feeney told The Forum that Reich will play against Prior Lake. Reich is also a passing option out of the backfield. He has 36 receptions for 297 yards and three touchdowns.

Other Spuds will need to step up in Mack’s absence. Fellow Golden Gopher commit and cornerback Zak Walker also plays as a wide receiver, and he has 50 receptions for 931 yards and 13 touchdowns. Drew Kessel is a three-star tight end prospect who is committed to North Dakota State, and he has 20 receptions for 277 yards and five touchdowns.
