Rousing second half sees Hull City maintain unbeaten home record

The Tigers came from a goal down to earn another point

Tim Iroegbunam celebrates scoring his first Hull City goal

Hull City produced a stirring second-half fightback to earn a 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town to preserve their unbeaten record at the MKM Stadium.

A dreadful start, just like at Fulham a couple of weeks ago, saw City second-best and chasing shadows, and it was therefore no surprise when former target Florentino Luis slammed in the opener just after 20 minutes of what had been a lifeless opening from the home side.

Their change of shape at the break sparked the Tigers into life, and they were level when Tim Iroegbunam slammed in his maiden Premier League goal, before Oli McBurnie's well-struck free-kick turned the game on its head.

Ipswich, through a moment of magic from Enciso, were level six minutes later as a pulsating second half continued, and that was how it finished between two sides going well on their return to the top-flight.

A tepid first half from City, worryingly similar to the display at Fulham, saw the hosts played off the park and deservedly behind at the break to a fine finish from Florentino Luis, and in truth, it could have been worse. In the second, they delivered a rousing response to get themselves in front, only to be pegged back for the third home game in a row.

Boss Jakirovic made one change from the side that drew with Brentford on Sunday, with fit-again Nobel Mendy coming back into the side after a two-game absence through injury, replacing Lucas Herrington, who dropped to the bench. Sorba Thomas, Robinio Vaz and Lucas Gourna-Douath were among the players who didn't make the squad.

The Tigers were distinctly second best in the opening 20 minutes, and almost got themselves in real trouble. From a throw inside the opposition half, they gradually and slowly went back to Tzolakis, who got his feet in a muddle and almost had his pocket picked by Emersonn, before nudging out to Mendy, who sliced out of play. It was a house of horrors, but one they managed to just about escape from.

Not for long, however, as summer target Florentino latched onto Ouattara's ball inside right and slammed his shot past Tzolakis, high and into the roof of the net. It was nothing more than the visitors deserved, against a City side who were still in the dressing room.

It took until just before the break for City to spark into life, with a flurry of corners creating some pressure, though goalkeeper Christian Walton didn't have a save to make. After being booked, Exequiel Palacios was perhaps lucky to escape a second yellow card for stepping across Bellloumi, who had gone foraging forward.

Matt Crooks was introduced at the start of the second period in place of Egan, which saw a change in shape for the hosts who went to a back four, and pushed Crooks in support of McBurnie.

That change of shape made a difference, and it helped the hosts play more on the front foot, and that's how they got their equaliser just shy of the hour, when McBurnie's lovely ball freed Iroegbunam to gallop into acres of space before steadying himself and slamming past Walton.

On came Mohamed-Ali Cho and he should have been freed by McBurnie down the left as the home side poured forward, but he chose the wrong option.

Belloumi's mazy run saw him brought down outside the box, and from the free-kick, McBurnie guided in to turn the game on its head. The visitors, though, threw on Maida, Matusiwa and Clarke and moments later were level. Encisio got a kind break of the ball and guided into the top corner.

A breathless second half continued. On came Norton-Cuffy and Morita for Coyle and Iroegbunam, with the right-back forcing a good save by Walton. Gelhardt was on for the final moments in place of Slater.

While City's winless run goes on, given their first-half display, they'll be pleased with the reaction, and clocking up another point ahead of Arsenal at the weekend.
