Tilsley strikes twice as Guilsfield fight back to draw

The match went ahead on an absolutely sodden afternoon at the Recreation Ground, testament to the ongoing work to improve the drainage, and the two sides produced an entertaining derby despite the difficult conditions.

Caersws edged the first half, although Guilsfield threatened and struck the top of the crossbar with goalkeeper Max Williams beaten.

The hosts broke the deadlock after 27 minutes when Jake Humphreys delivered a fine cross which the in-form Callum Francis-Jones headed home.

Guilsfield almost responded three minutes later when Spencer Parrish struck powerfully towards goal, only for Williams to produce an excellent save.

Parrish had another effort deflected behind after some good build-up play in the 36th minute before Jack Jones produced a last-ditch sliding block at the other end eight minutes later to prevent Caersws adding a second.

Parrish threatened again on the stroke of half-time, meeting the ball with a near-post volley which Williams pushed away as Caersws took a 1-0 advantage into the interval.

Guilsfield stepped up their efforts after the break and had a golden opportunity to equalise when they were awarded a penalty in the 62nd minute, but Williams saved Jake Cook's spot-kick.

Caersws wrestled back control and doubled their advantage in the 73rd minute.

A corner was headed clear but Ash Harries was first to the loose ball, beat a man and curled a superb 30-yard strike into the top corner.

Four minutes later both teams were reduced to 10 men following a melee in the Caersws penalty area, with Callum Bromley and Tom Edwards shown red cards.

The incident galvanised Guilsfield and the visitors took control in the closing stages.

Tilsley gave them hope in the 85th minute when Alex Buxton's long ball dropped kindly for him and he turned sharply before firing home to halve the deficit.

Guilsfield continued to press and completed the comeback two minutes into stoppage time.

Billy Clarke rose highest in the box and directed a header goalwards before the ball dropped for Tilsley, whose effort took a deflection off a defender and beat Williams and snatch a point.

Newtown returned home with a point following a 2-2 draw away at CPD Y Rhyl 1879 in the Novira Cymru North, with Jamie Hyne and Hanoch Boakye on target for the Robins in difficult weather conditions.

With the wind in their favour, Newtown started brightly and Hyne tested the home goalkeeper with a powerful strike after three minutes.

From the resulting corner, captain Kieran Mills-Evans headed the ball into the net, but the goal was ruled out for an apparent foul on the goalkeeper.

Rhyl took the lead after 15 minutes when Joel Giblin reacted quickest after a clearance fell into his path and tapped home.

Newtown responded five minutes later when Hyne produced a fine strike to bring the Robins level.

Sean Griffiths fired narrowly wide after 25 minutes before forcing another save from the home goalkeeper five minutes later.

Rhyl started the second half brightly with the wind behind them, but Newtown came close after 55 minutes when a corner resulted in the ball being cleared off the goal line.

The Robins took the lead in the 65th minute through substitute Boakye, who had been on the pitch for just four minutes when he found the bottom-right corner following a well-weighted pass from Gareth Evans.

Boakye continued to cause problems and his work out wide created an opportunity for Evans after 75 minutes, but his effort from the edge of the area went over the bar.

Rhyl equalised with five minutes remaining when a long ball from the home goalkeeper found Promise Mmadi, who broke away from the Newtown defence before slotting past the onrushing Dave Jones into the bottom-left corner.
