Shadman Islam will spend the night one run short of a Test hundred after bad light ended an absorbing opening day in Mirpur, with Bangladesh on 213 for 3 against a disciplined West Indies attack.

Play was halted twice in the final session. The first stoppage came with Shadman closing in on the milestone. After the resumption only four overs were possible before the light faded again. That left the left-hander unbeaten on 99. Shadman had been the one constant through an innings in which three of his partners fell to loose strokes and a fourth left on a stretcher.

Bangladesh won the toss and batted first, which was the expected call at a venue that has usually rewarded batting. West Indies used the new ball well on a surface that offered some uneven bounce. Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph kept a tight line around off stump, and the scoring was slow in the first half-hour. Seales eventually got his reward in the seventh over. He had worked on Tanzid Hasan from around the wicket, and Tanzid reached for a wider ball and edged it to Justin Greaves at second slip for 7.

Shadman looked uncertain early but began to settle, picking off boundaries from balls aimed at his pads before he started cutting and driving. Mominul Haque went after Roston Chase almost at once, and the pair added 59 for the second wicket. Then Jomel Warrican came into the attack in the 22nd over and struck with only his second delivery. Mominul came down the track to a flighted ball and hit it straight to Shamar at mid-off, to fall for 28.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto played freely after coming in. He drove debutant left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop straight for four, and Bangladesh went to lunch on 96 for 2 with Shadman on 42.

He reached his fifty in the 35th over with a single off Seales. Soon afterwards, Shanto missed a paddle sweep against Warrican. The on-field umpire turned down the LBW appeal, but West Indies reviewed and ball-tracking showed the ball hitting middle and leg.

Towhid Hridoy came in for his first Test since his debut in Harare in July. He was in only because Mushfiqur Rahim had injured a finger at training, but he batted with real intent. He began with an easy boundary off Shamar and later pulled the same bowler firmly. Shadman continued at his own pace and only went after deliveries in his hitting areas. Bangladesh reached tea on 177 for 3, with Shadman on 79 off 167 balls and Hridoy on 36. Their unbroken stand was worth 67 at that point.

The partnership kept growing after the break until Hridoy pulled up with a left leg problem while running between the wickets. He had to be stretchered off on 42. His fitness will be a concern for the hosts going into the second day. Litton Das steadied the innings once more as light faded quickly in the final session.

Brief scores: Bangladesh 213/3 (Shadman Islam 99*, Towhid Hridoy 42*; Jomel Warrican 2-33) vs West Indies
