Sir Jim Ratcliffe in line to sell major stake

Sir Jim Ratcliffe could sell a major stake as his Manchester United leadership faces growing criticism after another humiliating defeat.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe in line to sell major stake

Sir Jim Ratcliffe could be preparing to sell a significant stake as pressure continues to mount over his leadership at Manchester United.

The INEOS billionaire completed his initial £1.25 billion investment in United in February 2024, acquiring a 27.7% stake and control of football operations.

Ratcliffe promised to restore the club to the summit of English and European football.

However, his tenure has instead been overshadowed by controversial decisions and disappointing results.

United have won just twice in their opening 11 competitive matches this season, with Michael Carrick’s position now under serious threat.

Wednesday’s humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como exposed further defensive weaknesses, extending United’s winless run to seven matches.

Another managerial dismissal would raise fresh questions about INEOS’s decision-making.

Recruitment has also attracted criticism, particularly United’s failure to strengthen their defence during the summer.

The club spent approximately £155million on midfield reinforcements, but reports suggest senior figures already regret aspects of their transfer business.

Lisandro Martinez publicly criticised technical director Jason Wilcox, a key figure in Ratcliffe’s football structure, following the defeat against Atletico Madrid.

The Argentine questioned the club’s ambition and summer investment before subsequently apologising following discussions with United’s leadership.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe close to selling stake

According to the Financial Times, sportswear company Castore is holding discussions with potential buyers, creating an opportunity for Ratcliffe to sell his approximately 11% stake.

Chinese companies Anta and Li-Ning are among the interested parties, alongside several major American footwear brands.

Ratcliffe acquired his holding in 2025 when Castore purchased Belstaff from INEOS.

The business was valued at £950 million during a previous funding round, although its latest accounts revealed a £40.8 million pre-tax loss.

Castore’s founders, Tom and Phil Beahon, intend to remain involved, while financial investors are exploring opportunities to exit.

No sale has been agreed, and the discussions do not involve Ratcliffe’s Manchester United shareholding.
