Former Celtic player Frank McAvennie has revealed that the Hoops tried to bring Scott Bain back to the club, which is a damning reflection on the current state.
Bain left Celtic Park at the end of the 2024/2025 season and signed for Falkirk, keeping a clean sheet when the Hoops were beaten by the Bairns last weekend.
Speaking on his ‘Let Me Be Frank’ podcast, McAvennie said that Celtic approached the Scotland international about a possible return only for Bain to turn it down. It’s these sorts of moves that leave fans scratching their head.
TalkingPoints
Is Celtic’s board completely out of touch with its supporters?
Bain is the latest name in a list of former Celtic players and staff the club have come cap in hand to over the years.
In the dugout we have seen Neil Lennon, Brendan Rodgers and Martin O’Neill all return for more than one spell while at the club there is Kieran Tierney, Jota, and many more in the past.
Nobody is denying that Bain has impressed for his new club, but there is a reason why he left in the first place?
Dermot Desmond and the rest of the Celtic board say that they want to bring the Hoops forward and deliver memorable results.
It is clear that Celtic want a goalkeeper, but to go back to someone deemed not good enough 12 months before, Where is the ambition there? In the end they brought Sam Johnstone in. Neither an upgrade on Viljami Sinisalo or much better than Bain.
As proved by the hierarchy’s meeting with the Greenock CSC, there seems to be a failure to understand from senior officials why fans are demanding change. Celtic fans want a team to be proud of, an infrastructure that functions properly.
Instead, the board seem to be happy with mediocrity, and the attempt to re-sign Bain proves that.
