F1 star Liam Lawson has revealed he apologised to Max Verstappen after the two former teammates had a run-in at the Mexican Grand Prix.

Lawson and Verstappen were both handed a one-place grid penalty for their roles in their coming together, which happened in FP2 on Friday. It would later be irrelevant for Lawson, of course, after he was disqualified from qualifying due to an MGU-K infringement.

In FP2, Verstappen had decided to head down the inside of Lawson into turn 12, with the two drivers coming out of the corner side by side and even making gentle contact.

Verstappen's unhappiness was made clear immediately, putting his hand in the air to question what Lawson was doing. Neither driver yielded heading into turn 13, though, with Verstappen aiming to get ahead around the outside, and Lawson holding firm on the inside line.

Unfortunately, two did not go into one heading into turn 14, with Lawson using all of the track and forcing the four-time world champion to cut the corner slightly and go over the kerb. This resulted in him colliding with Lawson's Racing Bulls car as he returned to the track.

Neither driver was happy with the incident.

"He just drove into me, bro," Lawson immediately fumed on his radio. "He literally just drove into me. Every weekend!"

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen took a jab when performing his media duties after the session.

"Well, I don't think it's called unlucky. Maybe not very smart behaviour, what he was trying to do there," Verstappen told Sky Sports. "At the end of the day it’s not going to change my weekend, but if I were him, I would be acting a little bit smarter. When you're fighting for your seat, it's not very smart behaviour."

In the end, it appears that Lawson was the driver to yield, with the Kiwi revealing after qualifying on Saturday that he had apologised to Verstappen for what happened on Friday.

"It's not ideal. I went to see Max this morning to apologise because what happened doesn't need to happen and I don't want it to happen in future," Lawson told the media.

Of course, Lawson's tough weekend did not stop there, with the Kiwi going on to face further punishment from the stewards, who disqualified him from qualifying for an MGU-K infringement on his Red Bull Powertrains power unit.
