The Whites beat Fisher Athletic 1-0 in the fourth qualifying round, with captain Aaron Cook scoring the decisive goal in the 69th minute at Dulwich Hamlet’s ground.
Cook converted from close range after Luke Prince’s free-kick was headed down by Tim Bond. It was the defender’s first goal of the season and only his third in more than 125 appearances for the club.
City had needed resilience as well as a cutting edge. Goalkeeper Ryan Clarke denied Damian Scannell early on, while Matt Tubbs had an effort cleared off the line at the other end.
Fisher applied more pressure after the break. Prince cleared a Steve Watts header off the line, Clarke produced another fine save, and Watts struck the crossbar from a 35-yard free-kick.
But Cook’s intervention settled the tie and earned Salisbury £10,000 in prize money, taking their FA Cup earnings for the season to £18,000.
Manager Nick Holmes described the contest as a “typical old-fashioned cup tie” and praised his side’s defending.
The victory then secured a home first-round tie against Fleetwood Town at Old Sarum on Saturday, November 11, 2006, while travelling supporters and players celebrated a landmark afternoon in the club’s cup history.
The Whites were eventually knocked out in a second-round replay at Nottingham Forest's City Ground.
