The Philadelphia Eagles have struggled to establish consistency in the passing game, but tight end Dallas Goedert has become one of the offense's most dependable options as injuries continue to affect the receiving corps.
Philadelphia enters Week 8 with a 2-5 record after five consecutive losses, and first-year offensive coordinator Sean Mannion is attempting to improve production with Tanner McKee replacing Jalen Hurts at quarterback. Goedert's experience and reliability have become increasingly important as DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks deal with injuries.
The veteran tight end has 22 receptions for 228 yards and two touchdowns through five appearances this season. He caught five passes for 48 yards during Monday night's 38-21 loss to Dallas, continuing a productive three-game stretch. Philadelphia Eagles
Goedert also caught six passes for 61 yards against Carolina and six for 38 yards against Jacksonville, giving the Eagles a consistent receiving option despite their broader offensive problems. His role has become especially important for McKee, who is trying to build chemistry with Philadelphia's receivers while adjusting to the responsibilities of leading the offense.
Tight ends can give quarterbacks reliable intermediate targets, especially when defenses try to take away explosive plays downfield. Goedert's ability to work across the middle and identify openings in zone coverage gives McKee another option when protection breaks down or opposing defenses limit opportunities for the outside receivers.
The veteran also remains an important part of Philadelphia's red-zone offense, which ranks among the NFL's most efficient at converting scoring opportunities into touchdowns. Goedert caught two touchdowns in Philadelphia's season-opening victory over Washington, and his presence could become valuable again when the Eagles face the Commanders on Sunday night.
Washington has struggled to prevent opponents from scoring touchdowns inside the 20-yard line, creating an opportunity for Mannion to utilize Goedert's experience near the goal line. The Eagles also have rookie Eli Stowers and veteran Grant Calcaterra available after their returns from injured reserve, providing additional options in multiple tight end formations.
However, Goedert remains Philadelphia's most established receiving threat at the position.
The Eagles need more explosive plays and consistent production from their wide receivers, particularly as rookie Makai Lemon assumes a larger role. Still, Goedert's reliability provides an important foundation for a passing attack trying to improve during a difficult stretch.
As McKee continues adjusting to his starting responsibilities, keeping Goedert involved could help Philadelphia sustain drives and avoid the offensive droughts that have contributed to its five-game losing streak.
