Christian Horner to Mercedes? Ex-Red Bull boss reveals pre-Toto Wolff approach

Christian Horner has revealed he rejected an offer to become Mercedes' Formula 1 team principal in 2012, before the team appointed his future rival Toto Wolff.

Horner claims in his new autobiography, Drive, that F1 legend and Mercedes' new non-executive chairman Niki Lauda -- with whom he had previously discussed Lewis Hamilton's future -- visited his home during the off-season and offered him a substantial salary to leave Red Bull.

The former Red Bull boss says he turned down the opportunity out of loyalty to the team he had helped build, with Mercedes subsequently embarking on a period of dominance under Wolff and Hamilton.

"Maybe our interactions over Lewis had stuck with him because later that year, during the Christmas break, Niki came to my house and asked me to join Mercedes as his team principal," Horner wrote.

"I was caught off guard. Leaving Red Bull had never crossed my mind. When he then laid out a series of dazzling numbers, I realized he was discussing my potential salary.

"'Red Bull will never pay you what Mercedes can,' he said. 'I respect you as a racer. I want you to come. Besides, Helmut [Marko, Red Bull adviser] is a miserable b------.'"

The approach came after Horner had held discussions with Lauda about Hamilton's future, with the British driver considering leaving McLaren at the end of the 2012 season. Hamilton held ultimately unfruitful talks with Red Bull due to the finances involved, but Horner knew Lauda and Mercedes would be interested.

Indeed, Hamilton joined Mercedes for 2013, while Horner remained at Red Bull, where Vettel had just secured his third consecutive world championship.

"I listened to his offer and shook my head," Horner wrote. "At that point, Sebastian was at the peak of his powers and Red Bull were in the ascendancy.

"'Niki, I've been winning World Championships with Red Bull,' I said. 'I've built everything from scratch. I feel a loyalty to Dietrich and the team. So as much as I appreciate this, I'm not going to join Mercedes.'"

Mercedes subsequently recruited Wolff from Williams in January 2013, with the Austrian going on to oversee one of the most successful periods in F1 history.

Mercedes won eight consecutive constructors' championships between 2014 and 2021, while Hamilton claimed six drivers' titles with the team.

Horner, meanwhile, remained at Red Bull until his dismissal in July 2025, overseeing four world championships with Vettel and another four with Max Verstappen.

Reflecting on Mercedes' decision to bring Hamilton and Wolff together, Horner admitted he initially underestimated the significance of the partnership.

"Their union was interesting but seemingly inconsequential," he wrote.

"In my mind, I was helping a friend while weakening McLaren, who were our closest rivals at that time. So, what was the worst that could happen?"

Drive, Christian Horner's autobiography, will be released on Oct. 22.
