Dimarco Contract Talks: Inter and Wing-Back Still Apart on Wages
Hand signing a contract with a pen

Federico Dimarco and Inter are still some way from agreeing a new contract, with the wing-back’s salary the main sticking point as he also tries to win back his place in the Italy side.

According to a report in Tuttosport, the 28-year-old currently earns around €4 million a year. His representatives are said to be asking for €6 million per season, while Inter would be prepared to go to €5 million with bonuses on top. On those numbers the two sides are not miles apart, but nothing has been signed and a middle ground still has to be found.

Contract runs to 2027, with a club option

Dimarco’s present deal expires on 30 June 2027. The Turin paper adds that Inter intend to use a clause in the contract to push that date back by twelve months to 30 June 2028, which removes any immediate pressure and gives the club time to negotiate.

The longer term plan goes further. Earlier this month La Gazzetta dello Sport reported, as relayed by FCInterNews, that talks with the player’s entourage had already opened over an extension running until 2030. Inter have not commented publicly on either report.

It is easy to see why the player feels he has earned a rise. Last season he was named the Best Overall player of Serie A 2025/26, the first defender to win the award, after setting a new league record of 18 assists in a single campaign.

Knee problem and Carlos Augusto’s rise

The autumn has been far less straightforward. Dimarco hurt his knee in the 3-2 comeback win over Napoli at San Siro and, by Tuttosport’s account, has not yet rediscovered the sharpness that made him so decisive a year ago.

In the meantime Carlos Augusto has made the most of his opportunity on the left. The Brazilian has been one of Chivu’s most reliable performers in recent weeks and settled the Champions League meeting with Shakhtar, as we reported after Carlos Augusto’s winner against the Ukrainians. Competition for the role is now genuine, which only adds weight to the contract talks.

Italy place under threat

There is a national team angle too. Roberto Mancini has returned Italy to a back four, a system that does not suit Dimarco as naturally as his wing-back role at Inter. While he was injured, Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori took over at left-back for the Azzurri, a position he already fills in the Premier League.

Dimarco has already had one camp cut short this season, when he left the squad after medical checks at Coverciano, as covered in our report on his withdrawal from the Italy squad. Tuttosport notes that Mancini is expected at San Siro to watch Inter in person, so the coming weeks matter for both club and country.

What happens next

For now, there is no deadline forcing a decision. With the 2028 option available, Inter can keep talking without the risk of losing a key player cheaply, and Dimarco can use the rest of the autumn to show he is back to his best.

Whether the gap of roughly €1 million a year is closed quickly or drags into the new year, few at the club would want to see the academy graduate and reigning Serie A MVP feel undervalued. A return to last season’s form would make his case far stronger at the negotiating table.
