Key Metric Shows Bills' Davison Igbinosun Separating Himself from Fellow Rookies

Buffalo's young defensive back has taken hold of a starting spot in the secondary as a rookie opposite Christain Benford, and the stats support that decision by Bills' defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.

The Buffalo Bills' defense has had a somewhat erratic start to the 2026 campaign.

Although the team currently possesses the best record in the AFC at 6-1 behind an incredibly high-powered offense that is scoring at a rate of 33.3 points per game—nearly a full six points higher than the next closest team—the Bills appear to also have one of the most untrustworthy defenses in the entire league, nevermind just amongst the presumed playoff contenders this fall.

However, despite surrendering 25.9 points and 352.1 total yards per game through eight weeks of the season while subsequently also allowing 254.7 passing yards and 15 total touchdowns through the air, there is at least one player in the secondary right now who is shining through the darkness that is clouding the rest of the defensive picture.

And, it’s a player whom many fans and media members had questions about when the team first traded up to select him in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft in April at pick No. 62 out of Ohio State University: rookie cornerback Davison Igbinosun.

Although it was unclear at the time why Buffalo made the move for Igbinosun after previously selecting fellow cornerback Maxwell Hairston in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft the spring prior, the results on the field through two full months of Igbinosun’s first NFL season are encouraging, to say the least, and it’s making some folks within Bills Mafia forget all about Hairston’s bountiful miscues over the past year-and-a-half.

With four starts now to his name through seven games, Igbinosun—or “IGB” as teammates call him—seems to be settling in nicely opposite Christian Benford on the outside at cornerback as the calendar turns toward the second week of November, and the stats more than support that notion.

Tallying 28 total tackles and eight pass breakups thus far, Igbinosun recently grabbed his first career interception in the professional ranks after recording 194 combined tackles, 27 pass deflections, four interceptions, four tackles for loss, and three fumble recoveries in four collegiate seasons between Ohio State (2023-2025) and Ole Miss (2022).

And, while it was undoubtedly a great sight to see, it was merely the culmination of a lot of hard work and stellar coverage through seven games this fall from the 22-year-old Union Township, New Jersey, native.

In fact, according to Pro Football Focus, Igbinosun has forced the highest incompletion rate to the opposition among any rookie cornerback this season at a clip of 23.3%, placing him ahead of other notable youngsters such as Kansas City’s Mansoor Delane (1st round, pick No. 6), Pittsburgh’s Daylen Everette (3rd round, pick No. 85), Carolina’s Will Lee III (4th round, pick No. 129), and Green Bay’s Brandon Cisse (2nd round, pick No. 52) in the top five for the specific statistic.

Keeping that in mind, given that Igbinosun has seemingly overtaken Maxwell Hairston’s spot permanently in Buffalo’s starting lineup moving forward—which is part of a few other notable changes that paid dividends against Baltimore last Sunday—seeing the second-rounder mentioned amongst such good company is certainly a sign of hope for better production from the secondary overall in Western New York as the season progresses.

Another big opportunity for ‘IGB’ in Week 9

And, it appears that he’ll have another favorable matchup against Minnesota’s struggling passing offense this upcoming week on Monday Night Football.

Why?

Well, as it stands right now, the Bills will be facing a backup quarterback for a second straight week when they hit the field for a primetime matchup at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Monday evening.

However, regardless of which quarterback the Vikings trot out, Jim Leonhard’s unit must be ready to capitalize on the golden opportunity once again.

Stay tuned.
