Every run's worth two, says Michael Hussey as Australia face Day 5 survival test

Australia face a critical Day 5 in the second Test against South Africa at Gqeberha after a devastating collapse on Day 4 that saw the visitors lose 13 wickets and be made to follow on for the first time in seven years. The team begins the final day at 4 for 156, still trailing by 170 runs and under intense pressure to avoid defeat. With a maximum of 98 overs available, Australia must bat with discipline and intent to salvage the match.

Travis Head has made 87 runs and sits just 13 runs short of what would be his second overseas Test century and his first against opposition on their home soil. Former Australian batter Michael Hussey has offered strategic guidance to the embattled team as they attempt to navigate the challenge ahead, emphasising the importance of batting through the opening sessions and stressing that every additional run carries double value in the context of the match situation.

"If Australia bat the first two sessions, then hopefully they’d be able to pass that deficit and be in front – and then every run’s worth two," Hussey said to foxsports.com.au.

What is Hussey's strategy for Australia on Day 5?

Hussey stressed the importance of playing natural cricket while maintaining a percentage-based approach to shot selection. The tactical objective centres on extending the South African bowlers' workload throughout the day, keeping the opposition engaged for as long as possible.

"Every run that we’d get is another one that they have to chase down as well. I’d be telling the guys to play their natural game but try and play the percentages. Keep the percentage in your favour. Keep looking to score when we can," Hussey said.

How can Australia extend South Africa's bowling workload?

Hussey's broader strategy involves making South Africa's bowlers work multiple spells across the day, which could provide advantages not only for the current match but also for the third Test in the series. By forcing the opposition to bowl extended periods, Australia could potentially reduce South Africa's recovery time and impact their performance in the final Test.

"Keep trying to keep the South African bowlers out there for as long as possible. Australia’s goal has to be to try and keep South Africa out there all day. Keep them on their legs all day and hopefully if you get close enough you can save the Test match as well," said Hussey.

“Make them bowl two spells, three spells, four spells, five spells – because even if Australia didn’t win this Test match, you never know, it might just have taken a little bit of a toll on their bowlers in the third Test. I just think it’s such an important day. If Australia’s rolled over quickly and South Africa only had to bowl until lunch, that gives them more recovery time," he added.

Scrutiny on middle-order batters Nic Maddinson, Marnus Labuschagne and Beau Webster had intensified following their performances in the first innings. Steve Smith, who sustained a neck injury during Day 4 play, was expected to bat but had moved down the batting order as a result. Head's potential century would provide a rare bright spot for Australia's batting lineup as the team attempted to salvage something from a difficult position. The outcome of Day 5 would determine whether Australia could hold on for a draw or whether South Africa would secure a commanding victory in the series.
