Manchester United news as Michael Carrick looks to turn things around with potential successors circling

Manchester United are trying to manage another crisis following the humiliating 4-1 defeat to Como. The loss has intensified pressure on manager Michael Carrick and exposed tensions within the squad.

Captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned the team's tactical approach, while Carrick countered by highlighting the players' inadequate work rate, which was backed up by stats from the game. As reported by MEN Sport, Carrick will remain in charge for the home clash with Bournemouth on Sunday.

Hurzeler decision made

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler would reportedly reject any approach from United. The German manager, 33, has performed exceptionally well with the Seagulls, who sit third in the Premier League and are pursuing Champions League qualification.

Consequently, Hurzeler has emerged as a possible replacement for Carrick should United opt to make a managerial change. However, Brighton remain unconcerned about losing their head coach, who doesn't have a release clause, according to The Sun.

Moreover, with Brighton seemingly progressing under his stewardship, Hurzeler is believed to have no interest in the United position at present. It is understood he would be more receptive to overtures from clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Arsenal, although such opportunities may be several years away.

Nagelsmann shows his hand

United will reportedly consider hiring Julian Nagelsmann should Carrick be dismissed. The former Bayern Munich manager was under consideration for the role during the summer before Carrick was appointed on a permanent basis.

With him scheduled to manage Germany at the World Cup, a switch never came to fruition. However, following his resignation after the nation's last-32 elimination in North America, Nagelsmann is ready to return to club football.

According to The Telegraph, the 39-year-old 'would listen' to an approach from United and is viewed as a frontrunner for the position. Nagelsmann has previously attracted Premier League interest, having been linked with both Chelsea and Tottenham.

Former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, who is also unattached, would represent another strong contender for the role. Antonio Conte is understood to be keen on revitalising United, though questions persist over whether his forceful personality would suit the club.
