King’s Lynn Town held to goalless draw by Southport

King’s Lynn Town made it five unbeaten in National League North – but might well be regretting a missed opportunity.

It was a game of few chances which could easily be blamed on the presence of Storm Boelo – in truth Lynn were unable to break through a visiting defence, the first time that has happened at The Walks this season.

Manager Paul Caddis made three changes to the team that drew at Merthyr a week ago – Tom Scott and Ed Leach moved to the bench, with Ethan Warne not among the squad, while in came Aaron Jones, after suspension, Harley Hamilton and Ross Crane.

Lynn almost grabbed a fortunate lead on six minutes when Reece Hall-Johnson’s shot from a corner was directed away from goal by a deflection.

Dylan Dwyer escaped with a caution after appearing to elbow Jones off the ball, and as Storm Boelo gradually enveloped The Walks, it became a battle of attrition. Lynn held the upper hand for most of the first half, but were unable to crack an often-packed visiting penalty area.

Lynn suffered a blow when they lost Hall-Johnson to what looked like a shoulder injury in the early stages of the second half.

Home keeper Ronnie Hollingshead was brought into meaningful action on 65 minutes, saving well to his left from Danny Lloyd, but in trying to clear the loose ball, Ryan Tunnicliffe was adjudged to have passed back to his keeper. It left the visitors with an indirect free-kick on the six-yard line., Lynn packed their line, Lloyd accepted the invitation to shoot but the yellow line cleared.

Daniel Dwyer then should have done better than drive a shot over the bar.

Both were reminders of the dangers, but they helped spark a couple of Lynn efforts – although Jesse Nwabueze and Crane were both wasteful.

Tunnicliffe came closer than anyone on 85 minutes when he curled one around a busy area but saw Douglass Lukjancjks turned it around his left post for a corner.

King’s Lynn Town: Hollingshead, Hall-Johnson (Lindsay 56), Doherty, Mills, Clunan, Hamilton (Scott 62), Ubaezuono (K Thomas 62), Crane (Love 76), Jones, Nwabueze, Tunnicliffe. Subs not used: Thomas, McCammon, Leach.

Southport: Lukjanciks, Dwyer, Lavelle, Jameson, Lloyd (Cunningham 82), Griffiths, Williams (Davies 82), Perritt (Flanagan 93), Griffiths (Solomon 73), Minihan, Moseley (Ogwuru 70). Subs not used: McKenzie, Edwards.
